Listen to 16 minutes of raw, unfiltered sounds of the Perseverance Mars rover traveling in Jezero Crater. The noise generated by the interaction of the rover’s wheels and suspension with the surface can be heard, along with a high-pitched scratching noise. Perseverance’s engineering team continues to evaluate the source of the scratching noise, which may either be electromagnetic interference from one of the rover’s electronics boxes or interactions between the rover mobility system and the Martian surface. The entry, descent, and landing microphone was not intended for surface operations and had limited testing in this configuration before launch.

Sounds of Perseverance Mars Rover Driving – Sol 16 (16 minutes)

NASA engineers combined three segments from the raw audio file recorded while the Perseverance Mars rover rolled across a section of Jezero Crater on sol 16 of the mission. Sections 0:20-0:45, 6:40-7:10, and 14:30-15:00 were combined into this 90-second highlight clip. There has been processing and editing to filter out some of the noise.

Went car camping in the Trona Pinnacles this past weekend. Before we left I took some time to make a binaural rig for my Clippy EM272 lavalier omni-microphones. Rig is based on this design http://www.trackseventeen.com/mic_rigs.html from Curtis Olson. I'm really impressed with this design so far, more testing to come!

Recorded with a MixPre 3 II using 32-float at 96 kps and 40 dB gain. I also had a windjammer over the setup which was essential because it was insanely windy. Most of the "windiness" you'll hear in this recording is just the roaring fire. Processing including multi-band compression in the mid range and equalization. Mainly cut some low frequencies and boosted the high end because of the windjammer.

Caught this lovely singing out of somebody's window in the morning. Haven't heard it before and I couldn't figure out where it was coming from...

Angel In The Neighbourhood

After hiking up an off-roading trail, Lucia and I made it to the upper sardine lake for sunrise. The lake was mirror like and surrounded by glowing mountains. It was a serene morning with a lovely dawn chorus by the birds. It was so quiet you can even hear fish jump a few times.

For this track I took more time to edit this, still I think I created an honest representation of the soundscape. I removed some of the microphone noise and paid more attention to my EQ due to the stereo rig. In addition I was able to splice a longer recording (about an hour) into this shorter one to remove noises that Lucia and I generated. I thought about removing the plane portion, but I found it interesting how the birds seemed to get more active at those times.

Definitely best enjoyed with headphones :)

2021.10.09 Sardine Lake Dawn Chorus

Happy Lunar New Year! I went to a celebration nearby that featured a traditional lion dance, which I had never seen in person before. According to Wikipedia a lion dance is "a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and other Asian countries in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune," and that "it is commonly performed to a vigorous drum beat." This particular dance featured two dragons, each being manipulated by two performers. I decided to bring along the recording equipment to capture the drummers and the crowd's reactions. I edited down the drumming quite a bit to stay within a reasonable amount of time, and to feature a bit of the ambience at the end.
