A piece for my grandmother. She passed away on 8.8.18, and she will forever be the person I cherish the most. This is a piece I began writing shortly before her passing.. I wasn't expecting her to go when she did, but it was always a day that haunted me, and this is something that came out of that emotion. I didn't have this version, but I had a short bit of this that I had written and played at her funeral.

"Hail Mary!" is an extrapolation of Charles Gounod's "Méditation sur le premier prélude de piano de S. Bach" (aka "Ave Maria"). It adds yet another obbligato line -- much of it canonically imitative! -- to the one composed by Gounod ca. 1853 as a complement to Bach's Prelude in C Major from the "Well-tempered Clavier."

Here I go again, taking a perfectly good piece of Bach's and turning it into a monstrosity! 

In this case, I've taken the jubilant prelude on the chorale "In You Is Joy" from his "Little Organ Book," and adapted it for piano -- well, four pianos, to be exact... played by seven players! (The audio is a midi rendition, since I didn't have four pianos or seven players at my disposal.)

It takes that many hands to approximate the massive sound of an organ (with its multiple octaves all sounding at once)playing the five contrapuntal lines of Bach's original version PLUS the two lines that I have gratuitously added! 

Dense? Perhaps. Jubilant? Definitely!

My passion is beauty in all forms but my primary expression is through music. I'm a bit unusual in that I am a classically trained pianist who loves to improvise. I am also fascinated by sound and the science behind sound. 

I have created a unique business called Under the Piano which combines the emotional, aesthetic and psychological elements of music with the physics of sound. When individuals or couples lie under my piano I create an improvised concert of music. The vibrations of the music envelope and pass through the listener and have a profoundly relaxing and frequently therapeutic effect. They experience listening with their bodies. When I am not doing Under the Piano, I am composing or performing with the Amicus Music Duo. Our performances are an exploration into how context can change the listener's experience of music. Our performances are designed for living rooms and small intimate venues which open up the possibility for conversation and greater connection between the listener, the musician and the music.
