01 READY OR NOT

Return to Love is a song about how we aren’t born prejudiced, but learn which shapes our worldview. “It’s not our own choice,” the song says, “and it’s nothing divine.” It calls for the return to that innocence and acceptance we have as children. 

The songs in the Truth Project address the divisiveness and dangerous perpetuation of false narratives we’ve seen in the United States over the past several years. They also speak to the sense of isolation that occurred during the pandemic. They also seek to offer a sense of hope that change can happen.

This piece was written/compiled for a graduate class I'm taking at Columbia University, Teachers College.  It's a technology in music education class. It was inspired by Trump's "assholishness" and the recent calling of him "an asshole" by the mayor of Philly!!!!  It's a little rough in terms of GB skills, but the idea comes across, I hope.

Recorded Wednesday, January 6th, 2021 in Central Harlem, New York, NY. This recording is an immediate response to the tragic and nonsensical unfolding of events in Washington D.C. at the Capitol Building by destructive rioters.

Wednesday, January 6th, 2021, was historic. For all of the wrong reasons. What we witnessed on January 6th, was not protest. It was anger unbridled and unchecked, and a disservice to a world watching this nation in search of a model of existence. We have witnessed this past year a vision of a world in need of healing, in a nation built upon the sheer power of white supremacy, racism, imperialism, classist exploitation and abuse, and the historic marginalization of Black, Indigenous, and people of color. And we, as a nation, have a moral imperative to forge a far better path for them, moving ever closer towards a more liberated way of life. Life free of injustice and inequity, of barbarism and violence, of abuse of power and privilege and incurable bias – life that allows us all simply to live, and live well.
