Quorum sensing is a communication system that enables bacteria to ask a simple question: are we few or are we many? The bacteria do this by secreting a chemical signal molecule into the surrounding area and then measuring its concentration. If they are few, then the concentration will be low. If they are many, then the concentration will pass a threshold value triggering a coordinated response from all the bacteria simultaneously. For example, Pseudomonas aeruginosa switch on the production of multiple virulence factors that can damage the host during an infection.  Vibrio fischeri switch on genes for luminescence, making fish light up.

In the track, the chemical signal molecule is represented by single high pitched notes against a repetitive background.  As the bacteria replicate, the quantity of signal builds until reaching the threshold, when a wall of noise represents the coordinated response and the switching on of multiple clusters of genes.

The resistance of bacterial pathogens to antibiotics is on the increase.  Current predictions suggest that the numbers of deaths due to infections with resistant bacteria may outnumber deaths caused by cancer later in this century. Bacteria are able to resist the action of antibiotics in numerous ways. One example is the production of enzymes that break down antibiotics.  AmpC is a beta-lactamase enzyme produced by bacteria to break down beta-lactam antibiotics, such as penicillin.

In the track, the gene (nucleotide) and protein (amino acid) sequences of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa LESB58 AmpC are converted into music. The four possible nucleotides (A, C, G, T) are represented by the notes A, C, G, E.  The 20 possible amino acids in the protein sequence are each also ascribed a note, stretching over two octaves. Obviously there are multiple ways in which this could have been achieved, though some attempt was made at linking amino acids with similar properties. For every triplet of notes in the nucleotide sequence there is a single note in the amino acid sequence, representing the reality of the genetic code, where a triplet of nucleotides encodes a single amino acid.
