“I want to go anywhere and dream away” singer Karolien Van Ransbeeck whispers in ‘Summer Sun’, Few Bits’ luscious new single, taken from their sophomore album ‘Big Sparks’.  A pitch-perfect mix of  shimmering guitars, hazy vocals and loose but galloping grooves. Imagine Real Estate tackling Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade Into You’ at 45rpm instead of 33 1/3rpm and you get the picture. But there’s a lot more to this Antwerp based band. 

Debuting in 2013 with a self-titled debut album ‘Few Bits’ they immediately stole hearts of music lovers in Belgium and beyond. The band got invited to support the likes of Vampire Weekend and The War On Drugs and went on a UK tour with The Lemonheads. Gaining confidence on stage night after night is clearly reflected in the dynamic and full dreampop sound of ‘Summer Sun’ and the themes explored on the new album. 

Karolien’s songs about the shadow side of love, about longing for something that ultimately always remains just out of reach, and about finally having the courage to relinquish control come from a deeply personal place. “I always write autobiographically", she explains, "I'm not really interested in writing from someone else's perspective. A song doesn't just have to sound good, it also has to express exactly what I feel. Otherwise I'd rather throw it away. I don't come up with fiction. Every word, every comma, has to fit my head and my heart." 
Fresh from making their US debut at this year’s SXSW Festival, and just in time for the Canadian Music Week and The Great Escape, Few Bits is ready to win over hearts and ears all over the world with their new single ‘Summer Sun’

Case in point, this new video release from Paris DJ duo CLAAP! and DJ-cum-vocalist Santana – no, not the Spanish guitar legend, but someone altogether more modern. Part of a “mini compilation” edition (and an ongoing series) that also includes cuts from Until The Ribbon Breaks, Sirens Of Lesbos and K.E.E.N.E., “Jacques” has finally got the video treatment, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Oozing holiday vibes, the sunwashed visuals come courtesy of Polina Rabtseva, a fine art videographer whose output has included both work for big brands like Mercedes and Bacardi, as well as more esoteric explorations of erotica – from, importantly, Rabtesva’s female perspective. Filmed in Dune du Pilat (close to Bordeaux in France), and one of CLAAP!’s favorite places on earth, the video follows a bunch of real-life friends having an enviably good time; it’s the perfect accompaniment to the track’s ludicrously buoyant beat and unashamedly good vibes. Returning to its earlier format of releasing records with a single track pressed to each side, the new 12” encapsulates the essence of Razor-N-Tape’s ethos, delivering the distinct sound profile it’s become known. For Adesse Versions, his material fits right at home on the imprint, with his carefully crafted edits focusing on infectious grooves. 
 
With a steady beat laid over a subtle, yet thumping bass line and soulful vocals, ‘Bumpin’ NYC’ showcases Adesse Versions’ aptitude for pulling samples from the past and reimagining them to create masterful productions. It’s a ballad for those late night boogie sessions that lead on to the early morning, an instant classic without a doubt.

Moscow's Kedr Livanskiy (real name Yana Kedrina) confesses "Synthesizers help me maximally feel the present moment." Livanskiy was born into a shifting and critical time for Russia.  The Soviet Union had exhausted and old values were anathematized because of reconstruction.  A sense of displacement drove Kedr to find herself.  She's escaped reality repeatedly in her explorations into the imagery and ideas of romanticism, mythical and fairytale themes which visibly bleed throughout her work and especially on her debut full-length 'Ariadna'.  The title track which was named after the Greek goddess, Adriane, debuted via THUMP today who've described it "anchors its elegantly drifting shoegaze melodies with a knocking electro beat."

Kedr considers this album to be divided into a couple of different parts - like how one person can contain many different moods. The first half revolves around mythological thoughts and the second takes cues from the urban and suburban environments around her, all the while in the middle of everything is the hero who experiences real feelings and emotions. 

Kedr also channels the places in her neighborhood on the outskirts of Moscow (affectionately dubbed by her as "BORDER MOSCOW"). There's a river there where identical Soviet high-rises stand on both sides, with a bridge and garbage processing plant adjacent. Where nature and industry meet. The whole scene looks very apocalyptic, but also mystical and mysterious, especially at twilight.

Her inspiration for this record comes from the Izhevsk (sometimes referred to as "the capital of Russian electronic music") sound of the 80s, including groups like Stuk Bambuka V XI Chasov (Bamboo Crash at 11AM) and Samtsy Dronta. The movement in Russian experimental music is especially inspiring, with acts likes Valery Chkalov, Sergey Kuryokhin and Pop Mechanica; in general, the late-Soviet period was very inspiring with all its figures in music, cinema, their energy and their approach towards life and art.

'Ariadna' marks a change in her recording approach: her critically acclaimed breakthrough EP 'January Sun' was written and recorded completely in Ableton, while 'Ariadna' was written using the Roland SH-101, Roland Juno 106 and Korg Minilogue synthesizers, then mixed down in Ableton. According to Kedr, "This way, one gets into a flow of live interaction, here and now, with the instrument." 

To her, this interaction is more "raw and sacred" than actually mixing the track down, which seems like "mere formalism" in comparison. There is a definite leap in production values this time around, but Kedr manages to keep true to her sound despite the greater polish and depth.

Jacob Bellens, of ‚I Got You On Tape‘ and ‚Murder‘ fame is well known amongst Copenhagen‘s indie scene, and so it made perfect sense that Kasper teamed up with him, to create this spellbinding, modern pop song.

Kasper then asked Italian string composer Davide Rossi (who has previously worked with artists such as Goldfrapp, Royksopp and The Verve) to perform a cinematic stringsection, making the soundscape of Young Again complete.

To top everything, Swiss graphic designer and multi artist Florence Tetiér and her collective Fortune have created a beautiful music video, to give Young Again a strong visual side as well.


The Remixes: 

Danish indie disco kids WhoMadeWho provide an amazing interpretation full of live instrumentation mixed with casually dubbed electronic undercurrents. Wrapping the original vocal in a pair of skin tight jeans ready to rock out to house music, this hypnotic analogue version is as individual as it is versatile! 

Serge Santiago is a name any respectable electronic music follower should be familiar with. Blending funky italo disco, acid house and everything between, his DJ sets and productions hold him in a class of his own. Santiago‘s ‚Italo Boot Mix‘ whips things into a frenzy, just in time for summer closing parties worldwide!
 
Remix duties are also dutifully fulfilled by Heidelberg‘s Lopazz and Eddie Zarook, who have been friends and studio partners for many years. Lopazz, who‘s countless releases for labels like Get Physical, adds his classic analogue tweaked out touch, while Zarook blends in a touch of deep and techy minimal house into the mix.
