2014 marks the ten year anniversary of my compilation "Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats" which was originally released on CD (and limited edition 12" vinyl) on Essay Recordings in August 2004 (Cat Nr. Ay 04).

When released, "Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats" was the first compilation to introduce the mad beats from Rio´s hillside slums, the favelas, to a global audience. Baile Funk took the world by storm and the compilation received wide critical acclaim. 

Fifteen years later, the compilation is widely considered as the major international reference and compilation of baile funk featuring the biggest tunes of the genre from the early 00s. 

Today, the genre is still in full bloom and has diversified in various sub-genres such as funk ostentação, proibidão, rasterinha amongst others. Also, it has been adapted by many gringo producers from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, which fused elements of baile funk with trap, house, electro and various bass music genres.

This mix features the original compilation in a continuous mix.

The A2G EP by Blackalicious was released in 1999 by Quannum Projects and served as a precursor to Blackalicious' full length debut Nia, which shares three tracks with this EP. Perhaps the EP's most famous track is "Alphabet Aerobics", a collaboration with Jurassic 5's Cut Chemist.

More than thirty years after its original release, Malcolm McLaren´s "Duck Rock" album stands out as one of the most innovative - yet underrated - albums of the 1980s. For audiences outside the U.S.A. "Duck Rock" single handedly introduced the holy, global reaching innovations of hip hop - rapping, scratching, breakdancing and graffiti - through the music video of the album´s hit single "Buffalo Gals". 

"Duck Rock", produced by 1980s producer superstar Trevor Horn, was also one the first pop album to introduce sampling technology. Besides all the sonic, visual and technological introductions the most radical concept of "Duck Rock" however lied in the collage aesthetics of the album. Conceived as a NY pirate radio show, hosted by the DJs of the World´s Famous Supreme Team show, the album is a musical world trip on which Malcolm McLaren takes the listener from the Bronx to Soweto, to the Caribbean to West-Africa, to Kentucky and back to New York. At a time when the electro pop and New Wave was ruling the charts, McLaren proposed to look at roots music from around the world for musical innovation, patching together in an amazing, eclectic mix. The accompanying music videos for the hit-singles "Buffalo Gals" and "Double Dutch" showed Malcolm McLaren and crew dressed in the "Buffalo Girls / Nostalgia Of Mud" collection of his then wife Vivienne Westwood, today most known for the over-sized Buffalo hat, worn by Pharell Williams. The hat was inspired by "Peruvian women wearing bowler hats and full skirts, dancing with their babies tied on their back." said Vivienne Westwood in an interview in 1983.

With his sonic essay on "Duck Rock", Berlin based DJ, producer and Man Recordings label-head Daniel Haaksman revisits "Duck Rock" and presents an extended and alternate version of the album, including footage from TV features, interviews with Malcolm McLaren, Trevor Horn and his wife, alternate takes and versions of songs of "Duck Rock" plus unreleased fragments from the World Famous Supreme Team Show that was the founding frame for the "Duck Rock" album.

The Pharcyde is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of their iconic album Labcabincalifornia by releasing a commemorative mixtape. In a collaborative effort, the #BeamMeUpSpinna mixtape is mixed by NYC’s DJ Spinna and features “Nasty Habits”, an unreleased joint from the vault that features Ralph Tresvant & Bobby Brown.  Imani & Bootie Brown also asked a group of producers to remix and add their own personal spin on a few of the Labcabincalifornia songs that you all know and love.

Dj Mike Relm re-works a mash up of “Drop”, SBBX remixes “Groupie Therapy”, Moka Only drops his version of “Y”, Ta'Raach teams up with Bootie Brown to co-produce “Devil Music, The Devils Kitchen Remix”, and The Pharcyde’s own Bootie Brown remixes “Runnin’.”

DJ SPINNA is a heavily touted presence in the international soulful house music scene. He is known for his vast accomplishments as a producer, is celebrated for his “Soul Slam” events and Stevie Wonder inspired  WONDER-Full Dj performances and subsequent collaborations.

The Pharcyde’s sophomore album “LabcabinCalifornia” was originally released on November 14th, 1995. The group enlisted a young and then unknown James Yancey aka J DILLA to produce beats, like the cult classic “Runnin.”  They also collaborated with director Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich” “Adaptation”) on the video for “Drop.” Labcabincalifornia has consistently and continues to reinforce their steadfast refusal to tread familiar artistic grounds.

Nametag grew up in Detroit’s east, west, and north sides, constantly being shuffled around with his mother to avoid repercussions of his father’s drug addiction. He dealt with the familial struggles and nomadic lifestyle by burying himself into his notebook, penning lyrics about his experiences and drawing inspiration from legends like Rakim. He quickly became the latest member of a family chockfull of R&B and gospel vocalists, rhyming with his friends and relatives such as his cousins, Black Milk and Black Beethoven and he got involved in Detroit’s hip-hop history early, and in a big way: his first placement was on Slum Village’s ‘Dirty District Vol. 1’ compilation. 

From there, Nametag continued to body other Motor City classics such as Slum Village’s Dirty District Vol. 2 & his cousin’s Black Milk’s ‘Popular Demand’. But while contributing to others’ artist’s projects, Nametag continued to build his own footing with a collection of critically-acclaimed mixtapes, EPs and a full length album, ‘The Name Is Tag’; which eventually earned the respect of indie rap heavyweights and publications such as XXL, 2DopeBoyz, Detroit Free Press & more. 

Nameless is from Flint, Michigan, but his gritty soul and relentless work ethic are reminiscent of the legendary hip-hop producers from Detroit that have preceded him. Since placing his hands on a friend’s software and beat machine in 2002, he aspired to flip samples as craftily as idols such as J Dilla, Madlib, MF DOOM and others. He began plugging away in the lab, steadily creating sets of instrumental projects and using a knack for graphic design to craft head-turning album art. He eventually created “Feel It,” a single from Detroit staple Marv Won’s album ‘Wayne Fontes Music’ and since then “Detroit was hitting me up back to back” Nameless says. Since then, Nameless’ ability to morph dusty soul records into headphone-blaring bangers has turned him into one of the most prolific, sought-after young producers in the state. He now has nearly a dozen solo instrumental and compilation albums, and his ‘Flidelphia’ LP with Ron Dance placed his production behind Dwele, Paradime and others; and he has recently worked with DJ House Shoes, MarvWon & Vandalyzm and more.

While Nametag linked up with Nameless initially based on the similarity of their monikers, the duo’s chemistry was evident immediately, as they quickly created “Blaow!” and “Raw Dirty Filth,” the latter landing on DJ Premier’s satellite radio show. With the rest of their collaborative debut, ‘For Namesake’, the duo take theie biggest step yet toward living up to their hometown’s legacy. Nametag uses his candid, clever rhymes to address a fickle music industry, shady women, the resilience of his family and employs good old-fashioned sh*t talking, while Nameless’ melodic grit pays homage to Motown’s past. 

With appearances by Motor City vets (Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Miz Korona) and youngsters (Mahd, Jahshua Smith) alike, ‘For Namesake’ continues to cement Nametag & Nameless as one of Detroit’s fastest rising talents.
