First single from "Body of Content" Out April 30th as Posh Isolation 253

The fourth piece in Varg²™ and Croatian Amor's ongoing collaboration embraces the novel unions and arrangements of our digital world.

Whether thought of as patchwork, medley, or chorus, 'Body Of Content' brings together a long list of accomplices from many places in the world. NikkiH2OP, Vallmo, Charity SsB, Exploited Body, Alberto, Olimpia, CTM, Jeuru, Matti Bye, and LYZZA are brought into a united congregation. An asymmetrical body rises. 

'Body of Content' is made almost entirely as an email collaboration. A product of a year of lockdowns, it can be thought of as a coping mechanism given form, yet it could be heard as proof that meaningful creative collaborations will persist in times of global crisis. These exchanges stood in for movement between continents, countries, and regions, tracing a network that feels uncanny for its playful communication at a distance.

As a reflection of the real life of screen life, there's a new kind of 'we' that is being intimated with every interaction. It's a frontier that contorts. It's infinitely reciprocal, and the plasticity of assemblages are prized. Fluidity persists, if only because that is all that will. Movement changes with new stitches undone, and all work is play.

Across nine tracks, each artist's contribution sums to an album with a strangely luminous hue. Human and uncanny, the delicate foley of virtual worlds is coupled with a palette of vocal treatments that braid the vocal cords to our new platforms of communication.

Beginning with 2018's 'Body Of Water' EP, and then following with 'Body Of Carbon' and 'Body Of Lila,' each of Varg²™ and Croatian Amor's serialised collaborations have brought different aspects of our hyper-compressed present into a spirited frame. Exploited Body's additional production work, including mixing and mastering duties, caps the many-armed exercises of 'Body Of Content.'

Fountain of Meaning is a new sonic fiction from sound artist J.G. Biberkopf following last year’s Ecologies II: Ecosystems of Excess released on Knives. Emerging out of a situation of overflow, the record burrows deeper into his practice of palpable audio theater with a study of object and relations across space-time specific sounds.

The Fountain as a theme reflects a spouting and spilling of information, an erotic gushing of imagined aural history. “The Fountain was the source of water in the public space in cities,” J.G. Biberkopf explains. “Now it’s pretty much a sexualised architectural gesture of both beautification and the spectacle of dominant ideologies.”

The western classical musical canon, much like the perpetual coming of the fountain, flush the headphone space with stimuli. Reflex and memory guides the listener through a semiotic architecture of processed recordings of masses in Catholic churches and contemporary performances of pre-medieval music. A liquidity of structure has an anxious influence and is a closed system approach to form and imagination. When water flows, it fills every space, then spills over to claim more. History is equally abundant and alive. We have never had as much history as we have now. We have never been able to see ourselves as we can now.

A knowledge of a grander architecture of knowing and recalling oppress the ecologies of human decision-making.The nature of the archive has transformed into a total and panoptic intelligence. A life is a gamble as the inventory of the world overflows into the production of a spectral third, an other, a confrontation. Fountain of Meaning offers a dynamic tension and release. A molecular tragedy, our abject recovery into a collaborative reimagining of a trauma long forgotten.

Nicholas Zhu’s previous efforts as bod [包家巷] saw them folding context both online and off into palpable concepts like MoVA (Museum of Virtual Art) as well as sound pieces Advent of the Silicon Rain [硅雨来临] and Limpid Fear [清澈恐惧], released through Quantum Natives and KNIVES, respectively. Zhu’s music is primarily constructed through piano and voice, “performed” through active manipulation of a MIDI instruments and vocal recordings overlaid and situated in field recordings and soundtrack rips. The resulting world created reads as documentations or meta-considerations of the present moment, measurements of the experience of life through technologically informed sound design.

The latest bod [包家巷] work, entitled The Recurrence Of Infections [复发感染], is an elliptically sweet yet unsettling audio piece that conceptualizes a state of mind in “the quiet hours of laborious coping that fall into the areas between work and sleep.” It comes with additional sound and video supplements that "are components of the larger, continuous work that is living." The title refers to a series of health issues that they had while living in Los Angeles. 

Zhu has stated in previous interviews that their practice in music is distinct from their art, citing “socioeconomic precarity” as a driving force behind their work. “I put my studio practice on hold specifically to work on music (for efficacy, music allows me to engage with people in a way that art can’t) knowing that meaning doesn’t translate, even when literally transcribed.”

The spacious desolation and emotional surges that are felt in the sound piece aren’t intended to impart meaning as much as expressing an affect, specifically attuned to the darker moments in one’s life when they are self-loathing, lost in unease and intense fear. The work varies from calm and polymorphous soundscapes to maximal onslaughts of noise and harmonies, each section stitched to the next as nonlinear, anecdotal chapters in a story of personal experience.
