Sean Milanovich is a former Chairman of the Agua Caliente Tribe of Cahuilla Indians, and current Vice President of the Native American Land Conservancy. He recently participated in the Indigenous led Bioneers convention in Rancho Mirage/Palm Springs on the Rights of Nature.

What Are the Rights of Nature in Indian Country? 

Rights of Nature is a global movement spreading across Indian Country to protect our lands and natural resources for generations to come by recognizing nature’s legal rights. At its core, Rights of Nature law codifies Indigenous values for caring for Mother Earth. For the last 4 years, the Bioneers Indigeneity team has been exploring how Rights of Nature can be implemented by Tribes in the United States. We ran our strategy across a working group of Tribal leaders, attorneys, and organizers. We meticulously researched intersections of the law to anticipate ways to bring about Rights of Nature in Indian Country. We developed a guide for Tribal organizers to build capacity to present and pass a Rights of Nature law to protect lands, waters, and key species. And, we have begun to share information with Tribes interested in exploring Rights of Nature through regional workshops in the Southwest and Northeast.

Edwin Ramoran is an independent curator, writer, arts consultant, DJ, and party promoter who lives and works in New York City. He was born and raised in Palm Springs, California. He received a BA in Art History with minors in Ethnic Studies and Journalism from the University of California, Riverside. He serves on the Boards of Pepatian, which supports Latino performing and visual artists, and the Bronx Heroes Comic Con. He is the recipient of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts’ Curatorial Fellowship and the apexart Outbound Residency. In 2012, he was Guest Lead Curator for Art in Odd Places 2012: MODEL. He held directorships and curatorial positions at Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art in Newark, NJ, Longwood Arts Project of the Bronx Council on the Arts at Hostos Community College, and The Bronx Museum of the Arts. He has been a guest curator at MoMA/P.S. 1, PERFORMA 05 at Artists Space, Corridor Gallery, Dixon Place, Pussy Faggot at The Delancey, Boston Center for the Arts, Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, Museum of Chinese in America, Center for Book Arts,  Dieu Donné Papermill, Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning, The LGBT Center, Visual AIDS, and Krause Gallery. His critical writing has been published by The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York Foundation for the Arts, and En Foco's magazine Nueva Luz. His exhibitions have been reviewed in The New York Times, Artforum, Time Out/New York, Art Asia Pacific, Art on Paper, The Star-Ledger, Gay City News, Weekend Knack, and The New York Sun, and featured in GIANT. He was a guest with the late Mel Cheren "Godfather of Disco" on John Schaefer's Soundcheck show "Disco Lost and Found" on WNYC 93.9 FM. He performed in Ricardo A. Bracho's play "Sissy" at Pregones Theater. At UC Riverside, he was the art and entertainment editor at The Highlander and a college radio DJ for KUCR 88.1 FM. He has deejayed and promoted many NYC parties including SPANK, BASSMENT at the Monster, SUNDAY SITUATION at Westside Tavern, XANADUDE, ROCKEM SOCKEM at Otto's Shrunken Head, FRESAS Y CHOCOLATE at Downtown Bronx, SOLID at Metropolitan, and UNISEXI at the Hose.
