I was inspired to write this tape piece after listening to the music of Henry Flynt. This piece is dedicated to Cassandra who reminded me of his music.

After Henry Flynt - for Cassandra

Recording of a performance of my recent composition "Notre Dame" in the Kevin Barry Room at the National Concert Hall, Dublin on February 18, 2015.

The piece takes as its inspiration the opening chord of Machaut's "Messe de Nostre Dame". This chord (a perfect fifth) is doubled and then inverted with different pairings of instruments doubling each other with each iteration of the chord. The players are then asked to seek out beating patterns and other acoustic effects by detuning these pitches gradually and carefully. I'd like to give a special mention to Susan Geaney in this performance for the slowest beating I have heard from a human.
