DJ Koze's 2013 album opus Amygdala has continued to bewitch all who encounter it since its release. Tipped as his own personal Sgt. Pepper, the sublime long-player revealed a fully-realised and personal body of work, complete with a classic songwriting at its core, House in its heart, and veins coursing with psychedelic color. La Duquesa' was the album's dreamy single standout, a journey into deep, tropical ecstasy. XTC' begins in the same spirit, and captures the all the blissful allusions of its name, but its initial gentility belies the deep intensity to come. Floating pads glow with celestial ambience as a kick drum is gradually coaxed into solid form, and the introduction of spoken text begins the second act. Many people are experimenting with the drug Ecstasy,' it says, ...is the drug like the lie and meditation the truth Or am I missing something that could really help me". XTC' then transforms: sweetly imploring tones become demanding, gentle gradients between chords turn hard-edged, and sharp hi-hats cut through the haze. Complete with Koze's signature percussive quirks, it drives towards the track's final pay off: an undeniable, all-consuming, irresistible high. Knee On Belly' recalls Koze at his most tongue-in-cheek and overt, it is bright, bold and literally brassy, using cut-up horns of all shapes and sizes to patchwork together his own unique arrangement. With the highs and mid ranges accounted for, Koze adds in a swollen, thrumming bass line to mix to bring this floor-filler to life. Knee on Belly' recalls a raw, filtered and funky approach to groove, with a nod to disco house and the art of artful sampling, as it orbits between its own neon highs and simmering lows.

Die Mischung von Dub und Techno gibt’s ja schon eine Weile. Aber wie der gute JPattersson sie anrührt, erfüllt alle Kriterien für das, was man gemeinhin als frisch und spannend bezeichnet. Seine rustikalen Grooves stehen für draufgängerische Tanzbarkeit in waschechter ProgaDub Manier, der Klang seiner Trompete für eine Gefühlsintesität, die es in der digitalen Musikwelt so nicht gibt. Das zentrale Element von Elevator ist aber die Stimme - bzw. die ansteckende Lässigkeit, die sie verbreitet. Mit der Dub Version liefert uns JPattersson einen in Rhythmus und Melodie gebannten Sommertag. Es wird tatsächlich noch spannender, denn eine handverlesene Meute aus dem Acker-Umfeld hat Elevator geremixt. Timboletti kommt im Digitalrelease mit schleppend-bewusstseinserweiterndem Afterhour Groove. Dole & Kom gestalten das Teil zur hintergründigen Hymne um. Und Mollono.Bass schafft in der stilistischen Schnittmenge von Dub Version und Original eine hochgradig tanzbare Ryhthmuskulisse für die schwerelose Trompete.

The mix of Dub and Techno is not exactly new. However, JPattersson found a way to combine these genres in a way that checks all the boxes to be classified as fresh and exciting. His rustic Progadub grooves burst with reckless danceability, the sound of his tumpet has an emotional intensity that simply doesn’t exist in the digital music domain. But the catchiest element of his track Elevator is yet another one: It’s his voice and its contagious casualness. The Dub Version of this track is a bright summer day turned into rhythm and melody. It gets even more exciting than this, as a hand-selected group of party heads from the Acker family has remixed Elevator. Timboletti turned it into a slow, delirious afterhour groove (digital only). Dole & Kom redesigned it into an understated anthem. And Mollono.Bass created an energetic rhythm environment for the weightless trumpet that feels like it’s vibrating right in middle between the original and the Dub Version of Elevator.

The always on-point Hypercolour imprint deliver ʻDonʼt Put Me in Your Boxʼ EP from the talented Maya Jane Coles this winter. Featuring four new original cuts and artwork created by the multi-faceted producer, the EP marks the final 12" release before her album project takes hold in 2012.

The attention on Maya Jane Coles throughout 2011 has been about as intense as it gets and for good reason. Her productions, written, produced, engineered and voiced by the young artist herself, have won respect and support from peers, punters and press alike -- whether producing house, bass music as Nocturnal Sunshine or electronica alongside Lena Cullen as She is Danger.

Having recently remixed Little Dragon, Tricky and DJ T, Maya is building on early successes beautifully and this current EP for her friends at Hypercolour continues that progress in fine style.

ʻDonʼt Put Me in Your Boxʼ is the London-based producerʼs most ambitious EP yet. Much like her previous output the rich, melodic and warm characteristics are present but thereʼs an increasing maturity that bleeds across the four tracks.

The classic deep house tropes of Colesʼ early material are still superbly delivered in ʻParallel Worldsʼ and ʻCutting It Fineʼ but are presented in a refreshingly subtle and original context that provides a snapshot of contemporary house music at itʼs finest. While those bookending tracks tip a nod to previous material the lurching, dub-house of ʻDub Childʼ and the strikingly beautiful melodies ʻSomething in The Airʼ see the young producer exploring, creating a well-rounded EP touching on the breadth of modern house.

The pairing of one of the most exciting artists around with one of the most bankable imprints is always an enticing prospect but Maya Jane Coles on Hypercolour is essential.
