In Greek mythology Acheron is the river that Orpheus crossed to rescue Eurydice from the underworld. As its name implies, L’Achéron wants to open a path between two apparently opposed worlds: that of the living and that of the dead, the past and the present, idealism and reality.

Created in 2009 by François Joubert-Caillet, L’Achéron brings together a young generation of musicians from the four corners of the world, united around a shared vision: to rethink the accepted tenants of ancient music interpretation while making it more comprehensible for today’s public.

L'Achéron's formation varies depending on the musics it performs, the viol consort being its form of predilection. 

Based in Luxembourg, L’Achéron has been invited to participate in numerous festivals and musical seasons in Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, etc).

L’Acheron records with Ricercar who produced its’ first CD dedicated to Anthony Holborne, “The Fruit of Love”, received with enthusiasm by both public and press. Their next CD, Samuel Scheidt’s “Ludi Musici” will be available autumn 2015.

Lidija and Sanja Bizjak studied in Belgrade before joining Jacques Rouvier’s class at the Paris Conservatoire several years later. After pursuing careers as soloists, they launched their duo career performing for the first time Mendelssohn’s Piano Double Concerto in 2002 with the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra. They won two special prizes at the ARD Munich Piano Duo Competition in 2005.
Esteemed by the French audience, they performed at the Cité de la Musique, at the Musée d’Orsay, at the Salle Gaveau in Paris and also at the Palazzetto Bru Zane in Venice. They were invited to play at festivals such as La Roque d’Anthéron, Nohant, Sully, Auvers-sur-Oise, La Folle Journée in Nantes, in Tokyo and also at the Belgrade BEMUS festival. They regularly collaborate with orchestras, including performances with the Orchestre National de France, the Toulouse Orchestre National du Capitole, the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Pelléas Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre de Picardie and many orchestras in Serbia.
The highlights of Lidija and Sanja Bizjak’s career include their debut at the BBC Proms performing Le Carnaval des Animaux with the Britten Sinfonia at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and also their appearance in La Roque d’Anthéron in 2009 where they played Stravinsky’s Petrushka and the Rite of Spring.
Their first album was dedicated to Stravinsky’s complete works for piano four hands was released in 2012 by the French label Mirare, distributed by Harmonia Mundi, and was highly praised by the critics. They also recorded two non-commercial CDs of piano duets: a live recital for the Radio France program Déclic and two recitals (Mozart, Schumann, Brahms) with the support of the Meyer Foundation and the Paris Conservatoire.

Music by Amy Scurria.  Securing her first commission by age 19 and her first orchestral premiere by 24, Amy Scurria quickly became one of the premiere up and coming composers of her time.  Her accomplishments include performances and commissions by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the LongLeaf Opera Company, Sigma Alpha Iota and Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Vermont Youth Orchestra, Youth Pro Musica, the Shepherd College Concert Choir, and many others.  She has had performances throughout the U.S., England, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, France, and Japan.  Her studies include a bachelors in music composition from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, a masters in music composition from the Peabody Conservatory, composition studies at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ as a young teenager, and further study at La Schola Cantorum (currently named the EAMA) in Paris, France.  After working for ten years as an independent composer, Amy has returned to school to earn her PhD in music composition at Duke University where she has recently become an ABD PhD candidate.  Amy was invited to collaborate with conductor Sara Jobin and famed feminist author Carol Gilligan and son, Jonathan Gilligan on a new opera, Pearl, based on Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and is currently working on this project as part of her dissertation.

She believes that “Music is a powerful and unusual language that, when spoken well, can reach the deepest part of the human spirit.”
