House of Disco Records have been working hard to push their sound in a more original direction, and what better way to stamp out any notions of being an edit label than to recruit one of the most respected producers out there, Ron Basejam, to showcase his musical talents over 5 diverse and accomplished originals. Ron is widely known for his work with Crazy P and for a string of timeless remixes but ‘Tales From The Night’ is his first solo EP of original work since 2011 and it’s long awaited arrival seems to have found the perfect home on House of Disco.

The EP kicks off with the most club focussed track ‘When I hear that Music’. A relentless groove weaves its way through delicate keys, bossy horns and soulful vocal samples as the pace rolls on. Ron’s experience in arrangement really comes to the fore here as we seem to be constantly surprised by more and more intricacy. It’s the definition of music to wear your sneakers out to.

The second and final track on the A-Side is the more hypnotic ‘Kag’ whose blend of dreamy funk and hypnotic vocals come together to create a low slung sun drenched track for summer. 

On the flip we have ‘We Know How To Work It’ which features the signature vocals of Crazy P bandmate Danielle Moore in the most upbeat and catchy track of the EP, then ‘The Fire’ seems to channel some very Prince link spirits to keep us warm with some very complex vocal treatments indeed. Finally finishing off the EP is a reprise of ‘When I Hear That Music’ where Ron has a bit of fun reducing the original to its barest components and going a dubbier deeper route.

We've got a tasty exclusive for you today from Luxxury. His much lauded edit of 'Riders On The Storm' made some waves last year and then it vanished into a haze of legal ambiguity and only strong supporters of the track like Greg Wilson had it. Well we've got our hands on a live remix version from one of his 'Live Remix' shows to give you. His first every European Tour is coming up in September and I look forward to seeing this one in person. The first show of the tour is a show at Festival Number 6 where he's playing the Super Weird Happening Stage. 

Luxxury's version is one of the most interesting edits we've heard for a long time. Sultry as hell with vocoder vocals and a feeling that echoes in your head long after the track has finished. His additions are beautifully produced and this version brings to the fore background melodies from the original and puts them front and centre. Accomplished stuff

'Produced With Love' album out 23 June

@joeynegro continues to cement his place in the annals of disco‘s rich history with the release of a new version of his hit record ‘Must Be The Music’: a track that has been given a complete overhaul from its original incarnation.

Originally released in 1999 and featuring Taka Boom (sister of Chaka Khan) on vocals, ‘Must Be The Music’ was a hit in every sense of the word. Released by the Subliminal label, it was a one of the rare records to make the transition from club mainstay to genuine pop hit, eventually breaking into the top 10 of the UK singles chart.

Now completely reworked by Joey Negro himself, the record has been totally transformed and given a new lease of life as a shimmering disco anthem in the vein of disco demigods Chic and Change. 

“The only thing that remains from the original record is the chorus backing vocals. All the drums, music and verse vocals from Dianne Charlamagne are new. The original sounds a little dated to me now: it’s too fast and has that filtered sound that worked in the 90s and still seems to find favour in some quarters, but for me is tired.

“Because it was a hit I often get asked to play it when I DJ, so I thought it would be cool to do a radically different remake my own song, produce a new version I could play in my sets alongside original disco and the new music I’m making now.” Joey Negro

This new version of ‘Must Be The Music’ is taken from the forthcoming Joey Negro album Produced With Love. Described by DJ Mag as “his latest masterpiece…this is feel-good, love-inspired classic disco for the 21st Century” and as “sunshine in aural form” by Mixmag, this is only the second ever Joey Negro album to be released – and the first for more than 20 years. The overwhelming majority of music included was newly recorded: a real rarity when it comes to modern disco and indicative of the level of care and attention that has been poured into the project.

‘Must Be The Music (The Original Disco Version)’ is out NOW on Z Records. The Joey Negro album Produced With Love lands in June.
