A kill switch, also known as an emergency stop or e-stop, is a safety mechanism used to shut off a device in an emergency situation in which it cannot be shut down in the usual manner. Unlike a normal shut-down switch/procedure, which shuts down all systems in an orderly fashion and turns the machine off without damaging it, a kill switch is designed and configured to completely and as quickly as possible abort the operation (even if this damages equipment) and be operable in a manner that is quick, simple (so that even a panicking operator with impaired executive function can activate it). Kill switches are usually designed so as to be obvious even to an untrained operator or a bystander.

Santoku are well known for bringing the most upfront talent for their various artist compilation LPs and this next release from the imprint will be no different. Featuring eight producers who frequent the label, including Space Journey, Mean Teeth, dLo, VLTRN, Hijack MC, Sniper FX, Equivalent, Hajimari and Dimensional Dryft, the titled ‘Atarashi Chi' LP brings these exciting newcomers into the mix. Aptly named ‘New Blood' in Japanese, ‘Atarashi Chi' stays true to Santoku's roots, pedestalling the underground, technical sounds which make the genre so revered across electronic music. Santoku are well known for their support of fresh music and this forthcoming release will further solidify that fact.

Introducing the LP is Space Journey with ‘Remote', moving out on a sonic, sample filled composition and distorted bass rattling in between its segments. Then comes dLo with ‘Crazy', rolling forward on clattering drums and percussion that underpins the mix and adds to its weighty impact. The renowned newcomers Mean Teeth are next, with the climatic, string-lead ‘Shards', crashing into life and dragging you directly into its cascading drops. VLTRN then throw their belting slammer ‘Apocalypse' at your aural senses, featuring the grimy vocals of Hijak MC.

Space Journey returns for ‘Iron Armour', a track that alludes to its heaviness in its title. dLo too offers up another fresh cut, with ‘Automated Soul' taking you through different heights with its flying beat patterns and carefully layered synths. Presenting ‘Let's Go' is Sniper FX, a standout record from an artist who's slowly been pushing their sound recently into every corner of the scene. Then Equivalent follows with ‘You', a subterranean, nastily aggressive tech number that features the melody of female vocal crescendos. Hajimari brings out a totally different vibe with ‘Analgesic' utilising note arpeggios to form a liquid roller that juxtaposes against its spikes of LFO.

And lastly, Dimensional Dryft finishes the LP with ‘Wednesday Night'. Acting as the perfect way to bring together an album which proves how imperative Santoku is for the underbelly of drum & bass, the imprint and artists have shown just how lucrative the burgeoning drum & bass scene really is. And they're platforming the best of it.

As we are in our 3rd week of lockdown here in the UK firstly let me say Ii hope everyone is staying safe and sane. Understandably these are crazy, unsure times and we are all in slightly fragile emotional states. Lately, I've been feeling angry. For anyone who knows me, what's new right? Angry at our leaders and media. Angry at the bootlicking fuckers trying to pretend "they're doing all they can" and "no one could have predicted this"...

There appears to be as much of an effort at mass gaslighting as there is actually fighting the virus. I'm sick of hearing things like "this is not the time to discuss politics" or "stop making this political"...

I just want to get this out there and I hope people listen:

EVERYTHING. IS. POLITICAL.

Do not assume that politics is confined to the room full of braying posh tw*ts you see in parliament. It is not the incompetent morons you see spouting the same old script day in and day out on tv news. It is everything around us. The more you pay attention and attempt to understand the more you see the man behind the curtain they tell you to pay no attention to. Choosing to be a political ostrich is fine, you do you boo, but at some point please realise that whilst you're ignoring it, politics are shaping your entire life. The quality of your schools, jobs, healthcare, roads, prospects, housing and communities are all part of it.

Whether you understand or care about it, politics are fucking you. Hard. The incumbent governments are currently playing politics with our lives. We are at the mercy of poor decisions made by nepotistic munts and sociopaths who'd struggle to be hired in basic jobs but because of a life built on inherited wealth, privilege, greed and exploitation have managed to get very far with no effort or skill. Incompetence is abundant.

So anyway. It is times like these that art has a very real job to do. True art holds a mirror up to society. True art is political. A lot of the best music I've ever heard comes from a place of anger and has something to say. From folk and protest music in the 60s through new wave and punk in the 70s and 80s and straight into hip hop and alternative rock in the 90s. Music with a message has always resonated hugely with me. It has something to say and deserves to be heard.

So in that vein, I have taken elements from a track that has been one of my anthems since my teens and attempted an homage. It's angry. As we all are totally justified in being right now. Get angry, demand answers, stay strong...

The idea was to include it on an EP I'm working on for Therapy Sessions but it just feels like now is the right time for this to come out. Schedule be damned! I also feel that the least I can do is make it a free download. We're all struggling. Money means nothing right now. This is about the message. If this 5 minutes of shouty noise can bring 5 minutes of respite to your day that is all I wish for. Play it loud. Play it so your neighbors can hear. I know a lot of you are doing mixes and live streams during this lockdown so please, please add this to your sets (if it's suitable for your vibe as a DJ obviously). It's not about self promotion, it's about the message. Let's bring political messages back. I like to think my music has always had a message. From samples used to track names etc. Some people do not like to mix politics with their music (often completely missing the fact that whether they understand it or not, a lot of music they like is political. See list above) and if this rant has somehow put you off even listening to this then I bid you good day. Enjoy your ostrich life. For the people who dare to care... This is for you.

(dj) Crossfire started producing drum 'n bass music back in 1999.
After a couple of years of complete focus he got picked up by the infamous dj Trace from DSCI4 recordings UK.

2002 : Welcome to Wonderland

dj Trace signed the Crossfire track "Hydra" (on Spy Technologies LP vinyl - summer 2002) for his label, DSCI4. Hydra quickly became one of Crossfire's best received tunes and crawled into the playlists of Ed Rush & Optical, Pendulum, Bad Company, Andy C, D. Kay, Black Sun Empire, Paul B and many others..

Quickly another vinyl release on MC Ryme Tyme's  1210 label followed with the rollers "Hideout" and "Swordfight" (autumn 2002).

Trace decided to give Crossfire's own 12inch on DSCI4 008, "Counterforce" and "Firebolt" (2003).
The tune "Counterforce" got serious airplay from 
Pendulum, Ed Rush & Optical, DJ Bailey, Concord Dawn, Loxy, DJ Ink, Klute, Paul B etc.

Crossfire Recordings started off in 2003 with the track "Skywarp" and many other releases followed.

Bookings came in and the name Crossfire started to ring a bell in the mind of a lot of drum 'n bass techstep lovers.
(dj) Crossfire has played in Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Holland, France, Italy, UK, Estonia, Portugal, Czech, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Italy, Moscow, Latvia...
