New piece for networked live coding laptop ensemble and improvising pianist. Premiered at the BEASTiary events in Birmingham May 2, 2014.

PianoCode (extended rehearsal)

Signals from various microphones are routed to loudspeakers throughout the space, while members of the ensemble intervene in the signal path(s), altering the sound using live coding techniques (real time programming of computer music algorithms). Together this creates a convoluted and ever changing resonant system, coupling sonic improvisation to architecture.

Ikon<->nokI was composed especially for a unique BEAST event at the Ikon Gallery in February of 2014. For this recording's performance, the work was specially adapted for the full BEAST system and the Elgar Concert Hall in Birmingham.

Ikon<->nokI (ECH)

"leviathan" embodies the sonic world that one might hear in a littoral cave. The work was inspired by An Uaimh Bhinn, a cave on the Scottish coast famous for its unique harmonic resonances. The reverb used in the piece is modeled on the impulse response of a cavern; the vases serve as harmonic resonators through which many sounds are processed live, including the swell of ocean waves and the bass clarinet. The vases filter these sounds to bring out certain predictable pitches, which are then harmonized by the bass clarinet. The long, winding bass clarinet melody is the leviathan slinking through the cavernous electronic soundscape.

This piece is the first in what I hope will be a series of "UGen" etudes, each one focusing on a different SuperCollider object.
