Back after a little hiatus, Hive Audio buzzes back to life with Mar Deans new two-tracker EP "Purple Drama".

Tapping in the deeper seams of the techno/house realm, the Zürich-based producer dishes out two cuts primed for no-nonsense dancefloor use with that signature hint of suave, soulful appeal thats become trademark to his productions. Driven by a brooding bass and interlarded with Chicagoan vox samples nodding at the early house scenes heyday, the title-track "Purple Drama" paves the way with no-frills efficiency. As shuffling hat patterns and crisp drums pour martially over a bed of smouldering subs onslaughts and bleeping signals, Mar Dean pulls out an all-round steamy type of basement narrative. Sultry house with a capital S.

Bringing smouldering ashes back to a state of incendiary elation, the second track "Dandelion" reroutes us on a more subdued tech-y vein. Replete with boogie-inducing, weird motion-triggering syncopations, Mar Deans second offering has all the attire of a bespoke DJ tool, perfect for taking the dance floor right into the zone with its surgically laid-down patchwork of raucous bass and fluttering synth leads. For the name-giving track of this release "Ah Oh Uh" the two boys teamed up with Diode Eins. The result of this cooperation takes the audience on an atmospheric journey with a broken beat groove and 80s soundscapes, arps and vocal stabs. Nicone's pumping remix impresses with a straight four-to-the-floor kick and bassline groove combined with spherical chords and drone pads.

Part Danish, part Croatian techno maestro Denis Horvat has wasted no time in making a name for himself as an artist to sit up and take note of. After erupting onto the scene with vibe heavy releases on some of the underground’s most coveted labels Denis returns to Alex Niggeman’s AEON imprint with a club ready three track EP sure to set dancefloors alight throughout summer 2016. 

Opening with title track ‘Exit’ Denis quickly sets the tone for what’s to come with a rapturously rolling beat and instantly recognisable pounding bassline. With the introduction of long, drawn out bass folds and quickening synths going a long way to set the pace, Denis expertly builds anticipation before dropping the track into a deep, club ready roller – leaving no doubt in his expert production capabilities. 

Next up, ‘Moderna’ rolls in and keeps the vibe decidedly underground with a plethora of futuristic horns and synth interchanges quickly building suspense before the beat kicks in and the listener is taken to altogether more euphoric place. With a deeply moreish keyboard loop and atmospheric bass formations, ‘Moderna’ ups the ante on this record, taking the release from straightforward club EP, to artist defining record. 

Rounding off the three tracker, ‘Transparent’ opens with a tough punchy beat that can be instantly attributed to Horvat’s sonic aesthetic. The beat gives way into deep, driving drums before the whole track takes an almost acidic turn with waspy synths and a compellingly underground bassline, leaving no doubt in this track’s sure fire capability as a big room club weapon.

Calling in Marvin & Guy for remix duties the EP is brought to a close with the duo’s up tempo interpretation of ‘Transparent’. Keeping the track firmly club ready, Marvin & Guy’s influence can be heard in quazor like synths and elongated build up before the clappy high hats give way to an intense dancefloor roller sure to have a massive impact on the underground techno scene from London to Miami and back again.

Inner Symphony veterans Clawz SG & Mashk come together for this collaborative track, “Chrysalis” and its two remixed iterations by Bessiff and Modul Art. Rich in texture and complexity, each track tells its own version of an emotive narrative through robust synthesizers and melodies.

“Chrysalis” carries a driving rhythm that builds to a crescendo of cinematic synths that elicit feelings of longing in the listener. It seemingly tells a story, like the butterfly or moth emerging from its transformative state. Bessiff gives an ominous take on this plot, with darker pulses of synths weaving between the melodies. Modul Art creates a more cerebral, yet dance-inducing atmosphere with rhythmic variation throughout.

A captivating release by the two French producers, Chrysalis and its remixed accompaniments demand multiple listens to get a true feel for the stories they tell.

German duo Avidus bring their spellbinding style to Crosstown this March. The pair have conceived a four track EP that serves to showcase their unique sound.

Avidus ​have produced a mesmerising EP that submerges the listener in an intriguing sonic soundscape. Speaking of the creative process, they ​explain that “​the first sketches of ​‘XII’ and ‘Psalm 23’ were made in 2015/2016 during the process of producing tracks for our first live sets. The focus was on powerful elements that have an emotional impact on whoever was listening”. ​On title track ​XII prominent drums arise alongside dramatic strings that create a track full of suspense. ​Psalm 23 ​opens with an ethereal vocal sample that bleeds into a high-octane beat that’s pacing and intense. On the flip, “​more recent tracks ‘Lux’ and the new edit of ‘Revenge of the Whales’ balance the EP out very nicely on an emotional level”. Lux i​ s a dreamy and emotive number, calmer than its predecessors with a breathtaking breakdown, whilst ​last year’s ​Revenge Of The Whales ​gets a rework for Crosstown. Avidus conclude; “​we’re proud to share this release”.

Hailing from Kiel in North Germany Fritz Wagner and Marc Wolf, aka ​Avidus​, ​have forged a strong partnership over the years. Fritz began producing music in the late 90s, making Hip Hop beats and pop music before moving on to house. During his early years, Marc produced backing tracks for hardcore bands before DJ’ing at illegal, outdoor raves. He started his own night ENDVR at Kiel’s Luna Club, where he invited guest such as Âme, Roman Flügel, Barnt and Marcus Worgull. Their diverse musical tastes and influences are apparent in their music, which refuses to be confined to any one genre. The duo launched their own imprint Empore Music in 2014 that has charted releases from Johannes Albert amongst others.
