Live recording from the second installment of NIGHT BASS on February 27th at Sound Nightclub with AC Slater (Trouble & Bass, Party Like Us), Taiki and Nulight (Black Butter Records), Blaise James (OWSLA), Justin Jay (dirtybird), and Bones (Gotta Dance Dirty).

On Thursday, January 30th, we launched NIGHT BASS at Sound Nightclub – a new event series curated by AC Slater and his Brooklyn-based record label Party Like Us. Los Angeles was served up a deep dish of house, club, UK garage, bassline, and 2-step from AC Slater, Christian Martin, Astronomar, Petey Clicks, and Sleazemore. It was such memorable night, we wanted to capture the vibe of NIGHT BASS to share with everyone. And so, in the spirit of the old skool rave "tape packs" of the 90s, we're making these special live sets available each month after NIGHT BASS here on Soundcloud.

In contrast to the approach I took with my last studio mix, "Intuition (#055)," I decided to take this on from a calculated approach relying on reason rather than feeling. The mixes I respect and enjoy listening to the most are stylistically varied, so for this mix (not unlike most of my mixes) I aimed for an output that achieves the same, balancing lush vs stripped, angry vs delicate, synthesized vs organic, serious vs quirky.

The fun challenge of assembling a mix in this fashion is finding a way to weave through those various sounds without sounding jarring or schizophrenic. I believe if that's achieved, then the end result is an hour of music that can be listened to over and over again, staying fresh, and in rare cases, approaches timelessness.

I've been on tour these last few weeks spending quite a bit of time in planes, trains, and automobiles with lots of time to listen to this mix over and over. Obviously I'm heavily biased since I'm choosing only music that I love, but I'm just now getting sick of it after roughly my 20th listen. I hope you'll find this mix worth at least one.

The next discovery leads us to Rotterdam, the base of Joep Esseling and Bram Harmsen’s project “Esteble”. Within short period of time their cinematic sound showed-up on the radars of industry heavy weights resulting in releases on the likes of Diynamic Music, Anjunadeep, Stil Vor Talent and Connaisseur Recordings.  

Their current four track 'Ardent' EP Laut & Luise follows up powerful singles in 2018 - 'Socotra' (Stil Vor Talent) and 'Buchlapest' (DHL). The latest release threads a deeper, downtempo line, offering up a delectable listening experience.  

Now, Esteble follows-up with a new hybrid live show, primed for an exciting new stage of their journey.

What are the ways to ring in the New year? One way is to sleep through it by falling asleep in one year and waking up in the next. You can even go to sleep on a plane and wake up in an entirely different country altogether. Another option is to go to the village of Baarle - whose territory is divided into a patchwork of Belgian and Dutch territories with some shops and buildings straddling both countries - and welcome the new year in two countries at the same time. You can celebrate the beginning of the year not once, but, say, twice, first in the Swedish town of Karesuando and then in the Finnish village of Karesuvanto just across the bridge: while the two settlements are split by one and the same river, they are nonetheless stuck in different time zones. And last but not least, you can always spend the New Year’s Eve and the the New Year’s Day with your family at home, with your friends at a club, with strangers in a square, and all by yourself in a traffic jam. But all of that is of absolutely no account because no matter how many times and in how many locations you celebrate, you will then have to live the year with all the thoughts you secretly nourished in your head, all the plans you won’t manage to accomplish this year either, and all the dreams that will make the next 365 days better than the last. @madmotormiquel’s set is here to sum up all this.
