PREMIERE | Roza Terenzi - Rare High [Kalahari Oyster Cult] 2018

Roza Terenzi is the latest convert to the Kalahari Oyster Cult, the Australian producer debuts with four tracks showcasing her unique sound. Influences come from far and wide, shifting between electro, house, techno and even early rave anthems. 
The space bleeps of “Gigi” are soon interrupted by shouldering kick drums. Samples stagger and stumble before key stabs cut through beats in this hazy piece of early morning elation. 
“Mwah” maintains those euphoric moods. Snapping snares slice through shimmering synthwork and soaring strings to keep the night grooving. 
Darker tones enter with “Rare High”, but these shades are soon brightened by arcing notes. Acid lines squeak and squirm in this balancing act of disparate colours and chords. 
Distant lands and exotic encounters are conjured for “Soft”, perfumed percussion and meandering melodies mingle and merge for head swimming close of aromatic audio

Melbourne’s prolific electronic music scene recruited another valuable member last year, when Perth-born producer Katie Campbell, or Roza Terenzi, joined what has become a popular migration of budding West Australian musicians moving to the east coast.

Roza told us that about two years ago she felt she’d progressed enough musically to warrant an identity shift, taking the solid reputation she’d built with her first moniker Catlips into her Roza Terenzi alter ego.

And it looks like it’s paying off. She’s been making big waves around Australia – at least big enough to induce international demand that will see her set off on her first North America and European tour later this year. These waves have come in the form of some impressive gigs and records, like her debut live set at the carefully curated Inner Varnika festival near Melbourne last weekend. And on the record front, she’s about to drop arguably her biggest record to date: a four-track EP on Voyage Recordings.

“I was in the zone of listening to lots of experimental and trancey stuff,” Katie told us, explaining the creative origins of the upcoming record.

Our premiere is the remix from Vancouver’s own, D. Tiffany, AKA DJ Zozi. At least for the sake of the EP’s musical unity and cohesion, D. Tiffany was a wise choice for a Roza remix, with plenty of stylistic similarities between the two. In fact, their cross-continental synergy recently saw the completion of their collaborative EP on Vancouver label Planet Euphorique, set for release on April 30. So it’s no surprise this remix slots in quite seamlessly next to the three originals.

One of the first visitors to Planet Euphorique, Melbourne-based producer Roza Terenzi makes her triumphant return with the first LP release on the label. A playful yet cohesive collection from post-electro and extra-terrestrial techno to dreamy prog-house and low slung zingers, bumping us into the new decade. Modern Bliss, the sound of Roza Terenzi fully realized.

Never shy to experiment with unconventional sounds or mingle influences, the album presents 9 offerings to suit every flavor of raver. Opener, "Jungle in the City," takes down-tempo to a new astral plane with blushing pads and tumbling pixels, perfectly poised for a spine-tingling after hours sunrise.The title track "Modern Bliss" featuring Barcelona based singer/producer Ivy Barkakati encapsulates the dancefloor euphoria we have come to expect from Terenzi; in essence the energy of this release, contemporary jubilation and contentment amongst a chaotic world. Flickering percussion prancing above deep rolling bottom end, allowing bubbling stabs and synth sequences to lift Barkakati's intoxicating vocals to dizzy heights. “Exactly where I need to be, my thoughts create reality” truer words…

Flipping it over to the B side things heat up, “Yo-Yo” chimes in immediately with a tough onslaught of metallic polyrhythms and a pulsating melodic bassline coaxing you down a path less travelled and preparing you for the sexy sub action that demands your attention, "That Track (Rewired Mix)", buckle up to sweat. Sweet relief comes with the C side “Exhale”, dipping in tempo; esoteric atmospheres to fill your ears, something fresh to absorb with each listen.  To close off the record, something old and something new, “Eternal Lust” a delicate ode to the lovers and from the vaults “My Reality Cheque Bounced (Feat. DJ Zozi)” - a raucous party starter serving up that label defining sound, futuristic and bombastic, tipping its hat to the break. 


With subconscious salutes to the astrological world of OG maven Fiorella Terenzi, “Modern Bliss” invites you into an encapsulating, electronically ethereal universe. A record to summarize the myriad of diverse and evolving sides to Roza Terenzi, the full length allowing her to capture a moment in time with possibilities to transcend dance music expectations. Next up from London imprint Nuances de Nuit comes another four track V/A which further solidifies the label’s sound and vision; spaced out soundscapes and music with personality.

Their slogan ‘Pour Les Danseurs’ (for the dancers) could not be more apt, with four more cool cuts that are carefully engineered to be played right the way through parties of all sizes.

On the flip is Local Dub, whom having garnered recent support from the likes of Gene On Earth follow on from a stand out EP on iO Mulen’s Hoarder with their contribution, Moon Dog.

Tamango Records 12th release is undoubtedly its biggest one to date because Yaya's debut album "You Decide" is getting a massive remix treatment by 4 real heavyweights of the house music panorama.
The first remix is entrusted to a long friend of the label and one of the most iconic figures over the last 20 years, Loco Dice. The Desolat boss heads to trippy directions for his version of "Black Mamba", which is dominated by bubbling minimal percussions, swingy dirty hi-hats, and pressing shakers, wrapping an 8+ minutes ride that will keep you hooked on the dancefloor.

Next up, Spanish groover Cuartero turns "One Way" into a heady dancefloor tool that features swinging rhythms and energetic grooves throughout, mainly focusing on the mighty bassline and a compelling bold pace.

On the flip, FUSE head-honcho Enzo Siragusa re-arranges the meandering moves from “Be Yourself” into a tremendous basements destroyer, within which the vocals are combined with hi-pitched synths to increase the drama right before an impressive "hands up, heads down" drop pours on the crowd with a grain of UKG flavor.

Rounding off the package is the formidable S.A.M. who delivers one of his many club anthems: the original bassline bursts back into life again, and so do the juicy vocals that inevitably lead the track into a massive breakdown guided by his trademark catchy lead to form something that’s built solely for the dancefloor.
