AEX–03 | Serge Geyzel | A2-Take Your Time And Be Mine

In a convergence of two of the most celebrated names in contemporary electronic music, Karsten Pflum steps out on Central Processing Unit with the Liars EP. As anyone who has followed either Pflum’s work for labels such as Worm Interface/Furthur Electronix or the Sheffield imprint’s recent run of top-quality electro joints will have expected, this coming together proves to be a match made in heaven.

What we have here is a tour de force of modern machine music. With Liars, Pflum achieves that rare feat of making something that is at once boundary-pushing yet also thrillingly immediate, his attention to detail shining through with each well-placed snare hit or leftfield structural choice. Equally apt for home listening or dancefloor deployment, Liars is a delight for heads and hedonists alike.

Constantly evolving while also cleaving to a relentless groove throughout, opener ‘WAN1’ is a brilliant scene-setter for Liars. The track slinks between sections of seething post-Drexciyan acid and eerie vignettes which balance out haunted house synth licks with the sort of punishing bass blasts that recall early grime classics like Youngstar’s ‘Pulse X’. A sly shift of key halfway through the track only serves to redouble ‘WAN1’s restless brilliance.

After ‘WAN1’, ‘LOLA’ represents something of a gear-switch. The track’s wiggly opening bassline is a red herring - make no mistake that we’re fully into braindance territory on this one, the drums skittering across the mix as Pflum fills the track out with jungle-adjacent delays and softly insistent synth pads. As ‘LOLA’ goes on, blurts of synth and some stiffening in the drum work pushes the track into pure rhythm workout territory.

First B-side ‘MOUSFOLK’ somewhat splits the difference between Liars’ A-sides. This track has ‘WAN1’s unyielding stomp and prominent acid bass line, but the helter-skelter drum breaks and wandering keyboard lines are very much pulling from ‘LOLA’s zanier energy. As with the other joints here, ‘MOUSFOLK’ is elevated by Pflum’s composerly touch, the Dane frequently throwing in new sonic tidbits - a skippy snare tattoo, a single-note synth loop which sounds like a hovering spaceship - that reinvigorate the mix.

Pflum’s musicality is at the fore once more on closer ‘BALM’. For the first section of ‘BALM’, a rich and sombre keyboard fugue, you’d be hard pressed to say whether you’re listening to a producer of club music or a contemporary classical maestro. The way Pflum builds this central motif up with deft broken-beat drum programming, a wheezing synth countermelody and distant vocal sighs is equally delightful, the whole track coming off like a kindred spirit of the electronica-infused experiments on Radiohead’s 2000 masterwork Kid A.

A brilliantly unorthodox collection of electro-braindance hybrids, Liars is a barnstorming Central Processing Unit debut from the seasoned Karsten Pflum.

The project by Jens-Uwe Beyer and Thomas Venker boasts a remarkable origin story. In 2017, Venker, co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of Cologne’s Kaput magazine, hosted a gathering at Beyer's house, bringing together journalists, creatives, and musicians. To mark the occasion, the pair decided to join forces for an impromptu ambient-electronic performance, presenting themselves as a two-man band. That evening, donned in special costumes designed by artist Sarah Szczesny and fuelled by a generous amount of Japanese whisky, Hasan Poppu was born.

Over the course of the pandemic, the duo thought about creating a record based on the live recording of their premiere show. However, the synergy of their collaborative creative energies led them in entirely novel directions. Their self-titled, double-sided album traverses a wild and raucous terrain, moving swiftly from hybrid noise-techno to giddy party ecstasy, to strange and shadowy atmospheres. Including remixes by YPY, Hibotep, Lena Willikens, Efdemin and Barnt, the 11 tracks span a dizzying array of experimental dance-facing styles. 

'Die-Biden' kicks off as a high-vibrational vocal experiment seemingly voiced by a sentient German vocoder. 'Kodō' follows, featuring Venker's playful mantra set against a stomping beat. Willikens' reimagining of 'Teiko' transports the track to obscure realms inhabited by strange creatures emitting ungodly sounds. Meanwhile, Efdemin's take on 'Ekusutashī' pulsates with a kinetic buzz.

Flipping over to the B-side, 'Sakura' is a euphoric wall of drone punctuated by eerie whispers and mystical singing. Then, the second installment of 'Kodō' takes a fresh trajectory with a touch of Barnt’s electronic groove stylings. Finally, Hibotep's 'Shojo no yo ni flp' serves as the finsher – an unrepentant trance belter that disintegrates into sampled fragments.

Loosely translating to "broken pop music," Hasan Poppu is informed by Beyer and Venker's shared love for Japan. The band takes their cues from the country’s rich sonic cultures while also drawing on Venker's wordsmith background and Beyer's flair for melding melodic tech-house with song-based synth-pop. 

Originally out on Beachcoma Recordings, Hasan Poppu’s debut album gets a new lease of life on Osàre! Editions with a digital and limited edition cassette tape release. Sarah Szczesny reprises her role in shaping the visual identity of Hasan Poppu by creating beautiful, painterly artwork for the record.

"Emit & Transform" is the new album by Timon Kurz's project "Source Of Radiating Noise". The album is based on a single stereo recording directly onto tape. The captured instruments, spaces, and sounds were assembled into a work comprising five pieces. Organic, immersive, evolving textures, drones, and purely acoustic sounds can be heard. It is in the line between music, soundscapes, and listening pieces. The compositions and auditory narratives aim to invite listeners to lose themselves in them, to sink into their thoughts, or simply to dwell in the moment.

The compositions of „SORN“ explore, in the broadest sense, the manipulation of acoustic sounds and real spaces to give them an electronic character while preserving the organic essence of acoustic recordings and real spaces. He is interested in the narrow path between these two worlds and plays with the tipping between these areas. In the creation and composition of "Emit & Transform," almost no conventional effects were used; instead, relatively simple processing methods were employed. The various techniques draw inspiration from the practices of early, experimental, and electronic music but are reinterpreted in a contemporary working environment.

Premiere: La Nuit Je Mens - Raison De Force Majeure [RAS006]

Firing upon the engine. It is the commission of a just crime in favor of human skills. It is a revolutionary declaration of the act of walking. The oil stains the killer's arms and puts the car in a state of complete halt, forcing the passengers to walk. The engine is a signal of escape, and restraining the runaway means temporarily binding it. The spark plugs perform a crucial function, generating a spark to ignite the fuel-air mixture inside the combustion chamber. The heart of humanity is the spark plug inside the engine, it must be removed so it can stand still again. Carl Gari & Abdullah Miniawy step out of the way after spilling the engine oil.

The Egyptian-German collective, composed of Abdullah Miniawy, Till Funke, Jonas Yamer, and Jonas Friedlich, has been engaged in intensive collaboration after their initial meeting in Cairo in 2015. Earning critical acclaim from esteemed media outlets such as Pitchfork, NPR, Resident Advisor, and The Wire Magazine for albums like “Darraje,” “The Act of Falling from the 8th Floor,” and “Between the Bullet and The Front Sight, Casting Lots,” among others, they have showcased their unique sound at prestigious festivals and venues including the Institute of Contemporary Art London, Berlin Atonal, Haus der Kunst, Positive Education, and Rewire Festival.

Oktof أقْطُف is the first track of the album "Shoot The Engine" releasing on the 9th of May on Amphibian Records.

Amphibian Records is teaming up with Carl Gari & Abdullah Miniawy to bring the first full album into the label's catalog.
