Disquiet Junto Project 0515: Talking Cure
The Assignment: Write music for a psychotherapist’s waiting room.

Step 1. Imagine that you are about to consult a therapist. You are sitting in the waiting room of his/her/their office.

Step 2. Picture some comfortable chairs, abstract artworks on the wall, and some large plants in the corners of the room. The perfect music for this moment is playing out of a high quality, vintage-looking speaker. You are ready for your appointment.

Step 3. Create a piece of music that you imagine hearing in this situation. The duration of the piece is up to you. If you are OK with your work potentially being excerpted, please license it with a CC license that permits derivative works (i.e., any CC license that does not include ND, “no derivative works”).

Mood Modification Room - [disquiet0515]

"The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice. Conceive it as something that leaves room for something else — other instruments, other people — to join in."

This track features spare drums and two keyboard loops; composed into a basic intro, four measures of drums, a two measure break of mainly a keyboard loop, then closing drums. So there's room for bass, guitar, keyboards, more percussion, sound samples, whatever fits. 130BPM.

I often start files with some drums and one instrument, thinking I am setting up the scaffolding for a future song... but have a lot of files that only get that far. This is the most I've completed in a long time, and very quickly; so it is probably a mental thing - it's easier as part of a bigger collaborative project handed to someone else.

Caveat: Everything is panned to the left per the project request. However Garageband's panning knob isn't knocking those drums out of stereo, so I'm still hearing them in the middle(?).

Disquiet Junto Project 0535: Jigsaw Disjunction: 

MIDI score of Ave Maria sliced and diced, per project guidelines. My approach here was to rearrange measures to get new melodies that are almost familiar.

Step 1: Choose a favorite melody. It’s preferable to use one that’s in the public domain.

Step 2: Break the melody into pieces. It’s recommended to think in terms of bars, but you might break it into notes or phrases, or into random segments of time. It’s entirely up to your ear, of course. Experiment until you arrive at a satisfying approach.

Step 3: Play the melody back in a new order, reassembled from the pieces resulting from Step 2. The optimal approach is to do this live: to play the newly reconstructed melody as if it were the original melody. Doing so might take some rehearsal. Alternately, you might use cut and paste or other production techniques.

Disquiet Junto Project 0557: Condensation Is a Form of Change 

The Assignment: Interpret a graphic score that depicts four phases.
This week, interpret this image (bottom half of song graphic) as a graphic score.

For this project: interpreting each circle as eight measures, starting at 12 o’clock and working around. “Ice Mallets” percussion marks the beginning of each eight measures. I made a pass at background hiss as a “read” on the table’s cloudy surface but didn’t feel it was working. Maybe tape hiss in breezy movements would work.

Part 1: 1 key 2/3rds the time; “blot” sound lower right speaker

Part 2:  similar blot sound, then pad for 1/3rd, silent, then for final half. Pad is thicker, more details.

Part 3: two pads full duration. Some blotchy flairs during first quarter, little more just before end.

Part 4: 2 pads full duration. One is “thin”, the other a little fuller, neither bassy. Early disturbance sound right at end of first quarter.

Ending with a little piano plink for that last faded circle under the first row.

Per the project, some measures in 5/8, 6/8, and 7/8 time signatures. I am not sure if they are correct. It's a bit of a "Do Easy", in that I kept it simple and accept is as a music exercise.

Since the source track is bass and rhythm-oriented I focused on higher-pitched or non-percussive sounds.  The Sears field recordings were made this weekend so they were on my mind when composing as a sound source. I can see seven tracks but hope the disparate "sounds" unify into one musical piece in the listeners' minds.
