"Disquiet Junto Project 0525: Magic Number (1 of 3)
The Assignment: Record the first third of a trio.
Step 1: This week’s Junto project is the first in a sequence intended to invite, encourage, and reward collaboration. You will be recording something with the understanding that it will remain unfinished for the time being. Your part will be done, but more will happen."

I love this collaborative juntos, this time in order to leave as “unfinished” as possible I disciplined myself and decided not to spend more than 30 minutes on my rack.
I recorded a track of a single note (low E) bowed on my upright bass, then I overdubbed 3 tracks of dissonant glissandi here and there, I added two different delays and that’s it.
I didn’t polish it, I’ll finish this myself someday, I’ll add compressors and reverbs but so far what you hear is the charm of a 110 years-old instrument, the resonance of a 500 years old room, and the sound of a gorgeous Telefunken U47 tube mic. Nothing else.

Bass Drone (disquiet0525)

"The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice. Conceive it as something that leaves room for something else — other instruments, other people — to join in."

This track features spare drums and two keyboard loops; composed into a basic intro, four measures of drums, a two measure break of mainly a keyboard loop, then closing drums. So there's room for bass, guitar, keyboards, more percussion, sound samples, whatever fits. 130BPM.

I often start files with some drums and one instrument, thinking I am setting up the scaffolding for a future song... but have a lot of files that only get that far. This is the most I've completed in a long time, and very quickly; so it is probably a mental thing - it's easier as part of a bigger collaborative project handed to someone else.

Caveat: Everything is panned to the left per the project request. However Garageband's panning knob isn't knocking those drums out of stereo, so I'm still hearing them in the middle(?).

Magic Number 1 - disquiet0525

I found Daniel's bass part (https://soundcloud.com/daniel-diaz/unfinished-disquiet0525) utterly inspiring, so went about making a beat for it. So this started out as a dangerous kitchen, cutlery type percussion track with some guitar sprinkled over here and there. When it was almost done, I tore it to shreds again, remixed it and loaded the resulting abstract, non-linear, non-grid beats/acoustic guitar improv into Leafcutter John's Forester. 

A couple of trial and error type experiments lead me to  picking out this nugget (mostly beats mingling with guitar, as if by magic, inside Forester). 

I think this matches very well with the double bass solo groove. I hope you agree, and look forward to whatever gets added in the upcoming third week.

uno/duo/trio (disquiet0526)

My piece is a remix of "Phrygiad" by @SharkWithLasers with "triad" by @lazenbeeindustries

It has a lovely spare pensive mood and could withstand a bit of redirection towards even more dreaminess. I used reversal, overlays, time stretching, GRM Shuffling and a bit of reverb a couple times to accomplish this.
