"The [Lara Croft Overture] presents Lara’s theme, performed on the English horn by Kristin Naigus. This was the first piece I wrote for the score, with the intention of creating a sonic guide for the rest of the soundtrack. I focused on showing the juxtaposition between Lara’s posh, educated British upbringing and her perilous archeological adventures. While most of this track intentionally steers clear of overtly Egyptian sounds, its ending introduces an Arabic flavor that characterizes the rest of the score."

"[Introduction – The Curse] is the underscore to the opening movie of the game, and introduces some of the principal themes in the score. After a mysterious introduction with an oud solo (a plucked banjo-like instrument played by Stelios Varveris), Isis’ theme is heard on flute at 0:22. It is immediately followed by a blast of the theme of Set, the main antagonist in Temple of Osiris. The cue ends with a subdued recap of Lara’s theme."

"[Army of the Dead] is the tutorial level’s action theme. I wanted something fun and encouraging to start the game off, so I used a catchy bass rhythm and a high strings melody that immediately gives an Arabic feel. This track also shows a bit of the Indiana Jones influence in my use of brass climaxes and syncopated orchestral stabs."

“[Ammit, Devourer of Souls] is the theme for the keeper of the underworld – a giant female demon with the head of a crocodile, body of a lion and hippopotamus. Because of the curse placed on Lara and Carter in the introduction, Ammit seeks to devour their souls throughout the entirety of the game. I played a very effects-heavy flute solo in this track to give a frenzied feel to this chase scene.”

"[Beneath the Desert Stars] and [Knives in the Dark] comprise the first overworld music suite. Our overworld works a bit like a world map in a role-playing game, connecting the tomb levels with an exterior level that also has puzzles, hidden loot and combat of its own. Temple of Osiris has four overworlds, based on weather and daylight. The first is Night, as the villain Set has used his powers to cast all of Egypt into eternal darkness. For [Beneath the Desert Stars] I used sparse, sparkly timbres set against moments of silence to represent starlight amidst the darkened landscape. A somber variation of Set’s theme can be heard on flute, as well as Isis’ theme on English horn halfway through the cue. "

05) Overworld I - Beneath The Desert Stars

“[Isis’ Lament] is played in the various “reward rooms” that occur at the end of each level. There are no enemies and the entire purpose is to give players extra loot, so I took that opportunity to do a quiet, reflective piece featuring a harp and flute duet rendition of Isis’ theme. Various sparkly timbres play throughout the cue to represent the copious treasures in these reward rooms, and the piece ends with tense high string chords that convey Isis’ desire to reunite with her husband after so many millennia."

“[Under the Desert Sun] and [Blood on the Sand] comprise the Daylight overworld music suite. These two pieces were actually the first tracks I wrote for Temple of Osiris after completing the main theme, and so they were also crucial in establishing a tone and instrumentation for the rest of the score. Under the Desert Sun starts with a brief statement of the main theme on duduk, followed by a tuneful English horn melody (both gorgeously performed by Kristin Naigus). I used bright Arabic-esque string arrangements and a solo frame drum (performed by Aaron Craft) to give a feel of travelling through the Egyptian desert in burning sunlight. Lara’s theme is stated more fully with a cello solo towards the end of the cue (performed by Sebastian Freij), recapitulated in high strings that again give a sense of the desert heat.”

“[Blood on the Sand] is the combat variation of the Daylight overworld suite. I used fiery North African percussion (performed by Doug Perry) as well as handclaps and a pulsing 5/8 cello riff (performed by Sebastian Freij) to give a driving action sound. Like the ambient variation of this overworld suite, this piece explodes in bright Arabic-esque statements of the main theme a few times as well.”

Translation:
“Adeni kahteh”:  To quest for the nature of divinity; to strive for the divine; to find the center above.  Not a calm quest for enlightenment, but an intense need for it.

“Iseri koveni“: To strip the self; to rip away flesh; like peeling an onion to achieve that enlightenment.

“Edenash adeni”:  concludes the thought by turning the whole thing around - The light is in the shadows, the wheat is in the chaff, or, that the nature of divinity are the pieces stripped and thrown away in the previous step.  On a poetic level, it's saying that the perfected form, the divine state, was the need itself.  The beauty and the truth were there all along.

“Askadeh er crado”  excelsior plus suffering; a noble ordeal, the honor of having endured, plus the humility of the price you had to pay for it

“Saka nedisheh vado”  literally ‘spoken prescription vessel’

“Isa keni-eh edi”  literally ‘a mote of dust among ashes twinkles’; all vocal parts converge on this phrase to emphasize the profound importance of such a seemingly insignificant thing.  "Edi" itself means particle, but it's also an affectionate diminutive for beauty in simplicity, so the entire language of the phrase literally ends on the single imagery of that one shining particle.

Together, the last two lines allude to the noble ordeal ironically, setting it up as a huge event that ends with all focus on the smallest, most insignificant part of it.  In essence, to go through a huge, epic struggle or battle for enlightenment only to look down at the end and find it in a tiny twinkling speck of dust.  The chorus can be summarized as “This great thing in its smallness.”

(The additional refrain in the 2nd chorus contains less meaning.  It is mostly a sing-songy echo of the above translation as it was added much later in the writing process.  It merely supports the underlying meaning of the rest of the song.)

“Sakesh vetah edah naro”:  ‘Seek ye here what you already know.’  The last line alludes to the end of the verse--that beauty and truth were there all along.

Marc Aaron Jacobs (feat. Zefora) - The Fallen Will Rise [Twisted Jukebox]

It's been a week since the Legend of Korra finale. Honestly, I still haven't gotten over it. Confirming the love between Asami and Korra was probably the single most gratifying feeling any television show has given me. For it to also be part of a series that I've held close to my heart since childhood is also a blessing.

That said, I've been deeply motivated to write a tribute song to the series, centered around Korra and Asami's romance. I spent two days formulating the style of song I wanted to write. Much of that time was spent lying on my bedroom floor, staring into the darkness thinking about Korrasami in utter disbelief. I avoided remixing the ending theme because I wanted to convey my own personal feelings rather than remake Jeremy Zuckerman's, although I admit part of the cello sections I wrote mirrored it. As a big fan of orchestra pieces in EDM, I also tried to write a super emotional breakdown using traditional sounds, complimented by the girls' heartleft exchanges.

The finale was brimming with emotion and happiness, and I hope my song portrays their first passing through the spirit portal together. Admittedly, I hope you listen to my song while reading Spirit World fanfiction. 

I also have a version of this song without any of the Korrasami speech sounds, if that's what you would prefer.

Many thanks to the Korra fandom for all of the fanart and support they provided, and a very warm thanks to IAHFY, whose stunning artworks kept me around to the very end. I hope you all enjoy.

Jason Mraz - I'm Yours

If you've listened to Top 40 radio or flipped through the video channels during the past few years, odds are pretty good you know something about John Legend. He played piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" and might as well be considered Kanye West's sidekick, having assisted the producer and MC on several sessions — Jay-Z's "Encore" and Slum Village's "Selfish" being two of the more prominent 2004 singles featuring his work. A former choir director, he has also released a handful of energetic live discs, some of which are credited to his less hubristic birth name, John Stephens. And though he claims "I've got something new," you've also heard substantial chunks of Get Lifted in records made decades ago by Sly & the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Quincy Jones, and Bill Withers. This might not be a problem for listeners who crave anything that recalls the music they first heard in their youth, but Legend's over-reliance upon his inspirations is an impediment as much as a slick way to grab attention. That's because he has more than enough talent and charm to get by on his own. His own lyrics and hooks are unique and clever enough to get the point across that he's no everyday R&B artist and, just as importantly, he has a personable and instantly fetching voice you could listen to all day long. However, the association with West — whose Sony-distributed boutique label released the record — is very helpful. Without it, Legend would likely be zoned into neo-soul (2003's Live at SOB's New York City really makes this notion apparent), thereby standing little chance of reaching the ears of anyone younger than 30. The production work supporting his songs strikes a fine balance between soul and hip-hop, allowing him to appeal to those who are coming from either angle. This is a very good record. It's a given that Legend is destined to make at least two others that top it.
