Ansolo & Special Features - Unite (Original Mix)[OUT NOW]

Some records seem to come out of nowhere. Witness this debut EP by the half-Mauritian percussionist & singer Mo Kolours, which unites an array of more familiar influences with the Sega music of his island roots.

These heavily rhythmic slave songs from the Indian Ocean offer a vital clue to the sound of this enchanting EP. The rhythms lead the way here, whether the straight percussive workout of Drum Talking or the crafty vocal manipulation that drives the low-slung bump of Biddies, a song that traces an imaginary line between Theo Parrish and Gonja Sufi.

Dead of Night mines the symbolism of The Beatles’ outwardly chirpy Blackbird while his own Bakiraq (like Burt, the songwriter) resembles a soul classic pieced together from fragments around the flickering light of a fire. There’s a sense of spontaneity at the heart of Mo Kolours’ music and much of the music he loves: Jimi Hendrix, Nina Simone, King Tubby and many more. Like the best records, the result is so much more than just the sum of its influences: it’s a new feeling which breathes fresh life into the past and keeps its eyes set firmly on the future.

This EP boasts a the first ever remix by our favourite re-edit crew: Truth Is Light, whose incredible series of limited 12"s from Vancouver have accorded them cult status.

Mo Kolours - Biddies

It's been well over a month now since the magical sounds of Gleemer first entered my earlobes, despite this passing of time their album 'Holyland USA' has barely left my mind. It's like a 10 ft hole that you don't even notice you've fallen in until you realise you've been sat staring up at the light for the past 50 minutes.

Gleemer is the project of Colorado friends Corey Coffman and Matt Roberts, a pair influenced by the likes of Guided By Voices, Slowdive, and My Bloody Valentine. Recorded in his basement, a feeling of stolen moments and twilight hours seems ever-present throughout the album.

Gleemer are kindly letting us release 'Honeybear Pt. II' as a single however before we go any further, I urge you to head to their Bandcamp and download the full album for free. Although the song is a masterful piece of songwriting all by itself, when listened to amongst the album as a whole it knocks the wind from you like a sucker punch to the gut. Creating a cohesive album is certainly a lost art in the age of blog posts and hype-pushed MP3's.

The track itself is affecting and melancholic whilst still retaining a degree of beauty. Lines such as "I’ll go drag the river for the man I could’ve been" hit hard and are further reinforced when Corey decides to leave the shimmering Beach House melodies behind as the track descends into a perfectly organised mess of fuzz, distortion and squealing guitars.

One of the most painful things about running a record label is not getting to release every great piece of music that comes your way and this is certainly the case with 'Holyland USA'. Our interest was piqued having received a tip-off from Tom GfP that the band wanted to give the album away for free but it deserved so much better. He was definitely right and I'm sure in no time it will be receiving the love and attention it deserves. For now grab the free album and let it consume you.

We spoke to Corey about his favourite pizza, his response:

"My dream pizza would be the vengeance-crust pepperoni dunker za from kringle's beef palace.... or "the harbinger" which is a chipotle burrito wrapped in 2 giant slices from pizza casbah."

Hungry Cloud Darkening is the collaborative all-analog recording project of Nicholas Wilbur, Allyson Foster, and Paul Benson. Each song is co-written in a slightly different way- all with priorities in variety and spectrum and fidelity. The three grew up in Mountain Home, Arkansas and Nixa, Missouri but have resided and operated in Anacortes, Washington for the past 6 years collectively. The project inhabits recording/event space the Anacortes Unknown, where Nich is the head engineer. Nich, Allyson, and Paul have toured in Mount Eerie and have occasionally appeared in recent recordings. The band currently plans a thorough northwest to southwest U.S.A. tour for November 2014. The official release date for LP/digital and CD versions of Glossy Recall is set for October 7th, 2014.
