There were concerns about a possible lack of German voices in this collection but acid legend Carlos Souffront came to our rescue and his exclusive “Europe from Detroit” mix dispels them in the most unexpected, poignant and concise way possible. Kraftwerk’s 1977 “Trans-Europe-Express” imagined the continent as a haven of post-historical nostalgia. We asked Carlos to reimagine Europe as a province of Detroit in order to invert the usual perspective.
Often, the Motor City is an object of European musical desire, filled to the brim with projections even, and especially if there is post-industrial desolation to be admired. Let’s try it the other way around. The mix expertly strides between delicacy and a sense of impending dread that culminates in a brief sequence where German history unmistakably rears its ugly head. But there is life beyond that, there has to be. This is not a mind trip, this is a body journey.

CARLOS SOUFFRONT - Europe From Detroit

The first time we'd ever heard of Carlos Souffront was in 2006, when Derek Plaslaiko was encouraging us to book him for our first 3/03 acid party (alongside Mark Verbos).  Derek would not shut up about a party in Detroit where Carlos just played Aphex Twin (and his many aliases) vinyl all night long and demolished the place.  So it only followed that we should invite him to play an all acid set on 3/03.  Carlos of course was phenomenal that night and has been a regular guest at The Bunker ever since.  Earlier this year, when Aphex Twin began uploading a seemingly endless stream of unreleased tracks to Soundcloud, it was Derek once again who called us and said: you HAVE to ask Carlos do a mix of this stuff for The Bunker Podcast.  Carlos obliged and did this mix for us live in one take (after a surprise practice session on RBMA radio).  Enjoy!

For this issue we are beside ourselves to present a live mix from Carlos Souffront (Interdimensional Transmissions/No Way Back), shepherding dancers through the strange hours of the night at the July 6, 2017 Surface Tension with Drew McDowall and Hiro Kone. The selections wend a path through a sonic labyrinth of underground burrows and secret doors with unblinking confidence; in this garden of forking paths, left turns are always the safest bet. 
 
Carlos cut his teeth on Detroit radio, curates cheeses in San Francisco, and DJs around the world.

Juan Harrison is a Mexican producer best known by his production moniker ‘Tkuz’. He began his musical career as a drummer in a band formed with group of friends, an experience that helped him acquire a good knowledge of electronic music and synthesizers.
Juan lists his influences: Paul Parker, Kano, Divine and more current artists like Aphex Twin, Ural 13 Diktators and David Carreta. These influences have done much to develop the trademark Tkuz sound. His production teeth were cut on softer, melodic edits, including his your first track ‘Specialist’ for Black Leather Records, a track that put him in the crosshairs of many artists. The Scrap Mag magazine even chose to use Specialist in its first compilation.
A year on from Specialist saw Tkuz receiving more recognition in the form of remixes for the likes of Adriano Canzian, Equitant and Nicolas Estany and Mexican. Fascinated by the Korg MS-20 and the sound of the TR 707 he also edits Morgan Hammer’s ‘In the Box’.
Tkuz has continually shaped his own sound, and it’s a sound stamped firmly with ‘made in Mexico’, much like his compatriots, Zombies Miami.
Tkuz has built on his early success with cuts like ‘The Captive’ and the much-lauded ‘Space Love’, which was supported by artists such as Matt Walsh and the aforementioned Morgan Hammer.
Also noteworthy is ‘Let’s dance with the devil’ which was aired in a compilation for Clouded Vision, and the Tkuz collaboration with Spanish artist Myriam Love of Beatlove for the label La Dame Noir. With ‘Night Heat’ Tkuz also manages to attract the attention of The Hacker and this track is listed in one of the monthly charts of the French artist.

CMD is a Montreal DJ and producer whose live performances and DJ sets reveal a veteran talent for creating aesthetic links between various styles. 
Her commitment to finding and sharing new music is reflected in her radio show modular systems on CKUT 90.3 FM and her guest mixes for various podcasts. 
She has released music on labels such as Jacktone, Fur Trade, and Low Noise Productions, and performed live at events in Montreal and beyond, both as a headliner and in support of international artists. Her newest EP, Wild Light, was released in April by San-Francisco-based label Perfect Location.

Carlos Souffront visits Substance Nights. pt 1

We have Carlos Souffront, perhaps the true lord of acid returning from the depraved depths of the San Francisco underground to unleash his unique moody vision, killing it in his closing set for IT's Come Feel The Acid party on March, 3, 2013 (3/03). His first set warming up for Tin Man was also stellar, but that pure late night intensity really shines through on this mix. His first song is Hieroglyphic Being's "The Lost Transmission", mixing out of BMG playing Erika's "Tow Ride (Marcellus Pittman Remix)."
