Matthew Verse by Verse

God's Grace that He shows to the Children of Israel by desiring a relationship. Every relationship requires a bit of house keeping and making sure that that relationship can continue. God graciously gave Israel things that they need to consider so that they can have a relationship with Him. It was by Grace God gave these, if God was not gracious He would have never given the house keeping rules and instead the first time the Children of Israel did something just kicking them to the curb. God is full of nothing but Grace, and that Grace is pictured best through the person and work of Jesus Christ on the Cross.

We look at the debate on the authorship of Matthew, citing early church fathers and historical sources supporting Matthew as the author. The structure and themes of the book are outlined, with special attention to prophecy fulfillment, Jesus as the Messiah, and key passages in Matthew. We conclude with a look at how Matthew's detailed accounts of Jesus' interactions and teachings affirm its authenticity and authorship by a tax collector familiar with detailed recording practices. Key themes include Jesus being the Messiah, his connection to David, a new authoritative figure similar but greater than Moses, and God with us (Emmanuel). We continue our series “Intro to the King”, which follows a previous series on the foundations of the church through Paul’s smaller epistles. Previously, this series covered an introduction to the New Testament and a broad look at the book of Matthew in our Intro to the King, and now continue to be introduced to our King Jesus and expound on Matthew 1. This week's focus is on the genealogy of Jesus Christ as presented in Matthew, emphasizing His lineage from David and Abraham. Matthew stresses the significance of the virgin birth and Jesus' role as the Messiah. We highlight Matthew's writing style, Jewish customs, and use of Aramaic words, indicating his intended audience. The genealogy's significance, including the inclusion of women like Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba, is discussed. We look at Matthew’s importance on God’s promises and how they are fulfilled. The sermon also touches on the lives of various kings from David to the Babylonian captivity, illustrating themes of obedience, God's faithfulness, and human frailty. Concluding with reflections on Jesus' birth and Joseph's just character, the message underscores the transformative power of a relationship with Jesus and the importance of adhering to God's word. Practical applications include how believers can understand and emulate Godly principle in their life; and maintain a close relationship with God through the power and work of Holy Spirit.

There are new characters introduced such as John the Baptist and delves into his role as an ambassador for Christ. Matthew 3 emphasizes that repentance is an action, not just a feeling, and explains the purpose and requirements of repentance. We look at the distinguishing aspects between John’s baptism, Jesus’ baptism, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit, underscoring their different purposes and implications. Matthew also introduces us to the Pharisees and Sadducees in Matthew 3, and we highlighted their contrasting beliefs and practices. Matthew concludes this section of an introduction to our King with Jesus' baptism and the fulfillment of prophetic promises, emphasizing the importance of the Holy Spirit's empowerment for a believer's ministry and daily life.
