The Man From Ballasalla

Based on an old Manx Celebration (April 30th)& Commissioned by the Oie Voaldyn Festival, this piece of music marks the change from Winter to Summer festival, through the symbolic Black Raven which holds a special place in Manx folklore and mythology. The piece was designed to mark change for the better, working well also with Oie Houney/Hop Tu Naa the oldest unbroken tradition in the Isle of Man original which saw the bad spirits away ahead of the Winter to come.

Paper Boats - English version

A 1986 recording of Manx music to accompany the core repertoire of traditional Manx dance.
Mona Douglas' original notes for this track are:

'Peter O’Tavy.
Slow dance for four, collected by Mona Douglas.
This dance is different from most Manx dances as it is danced with slow, graceful movements with the body rising and falling as the dance is performed. It was traditionally danced at Manx weddings by the bridegroom and bride, best man and first bridesmaid. It was performed after the ‘breakfast’ as part of the wedding entertainment, which was usually a very lengthy affair. The balancing movements in the dance were often a test of the participants’ capabilities after their indulgence in ‘jough.’
The words accompany the tune, and today they are often sung for the last part of the dance.'

This 1986 recording was intended as a companion to the dance instruction book of the same name, which was first published in 1983.
Over forty years after its first edition, this resource remains the essential instruction manual for Manx dance and it contains many of the popular dances still enjoyed by all ages in performances, competitions and ceilis.
