COMMON MULTIVERSE INITIATIVE by Currents.fm in collab with @blvsh_collective

An experimental digital universe that fostered a unique mix of exploratory gathering spaces, artist-led rooms, and DIY streamings from 12-21st of March. I was invited by @blvsh_collective to live stream for this amazing project on the closing day.

“I am a Polish-born, Copenhagen-based emerging DJ. I’ve started my DJ journey back in February 2020. The dream of becoming a DJ however has been with me since I can remember honestly. Back in 2000s in Poland there was obviously no community or organization that would make it possible for queer women to learn how to DJ, unless you knew the right people and felt confident enough to exist in the very male dominated industry. 

The dream stuck with me for all those years though, so I finally got the courage and found the right place to try myself. Ever since then I never stopped. Since it all still feels quite new to me, nothing ever brought me so much pure joy and connection to myself than music and being able to share my love for it with other people. I am still very much on a journey when it comes to my style and what I want to transmit through my mixes, but I think that a lot of it is just my genuine appreciation for house music and the energy it exudes. 

A lot of the projects and events I am currently working on are together with BGM8S Collective I have joined this year – a group of house music lovers, producers, DJs, dancers, graphic artists, and close friends of mine with whom I try to create safer house parties in Copenhagen and bring the DJ community closer together.“

“I can definitely say, from my own experience, that it is easier for a queer woman to actually start DJing and do so in a safer environment. It’s easier to find community and connect with like-minded, genuine people who share the passion for music and DJing. However, I am based in Denmark which is a very privileged place in the world. On a global scale, it has definitely improved as well, at least for white cisgender woman like me, so it is a leap forward for sure. 

With all of that being said though, there’s still a lot of issues in the industry, and it all starts from the top – bookers, managers, club owners, people behind organizations, investors etc. Many still uses the oppressive system but just wraps it in the inclusivity and diversity trend. 

There are, however, many absolutely amazing collectives and non-profit organizations around the world living and existing to drive change (like BLVSH Collective from Berlin, Oramics from Poland, Community Bread from New York to name a few). These and many others have been definitely inspiring and moving me as a DJ. 

A lot of my focus has been lately on well, picking the right places/organizations to play at and for, even though it might mean that I’ll be playing once a year or will never be booked again. It is still a work in progress of course, because the hustle culture is very real and so is the mindset of having to play all the time and everywhere in order to be seen. 
Focusing on what aligns with my values and my boundaries has really helped me to find a supportive and genuine community and be able to also not to compromise myself as a DJ. The one thing I’ve learned and try to practice constantly is passing the mic – not grabbing all opportunities just because it’s a DJ gig but making space for the right people.“
