The Balearic Gabba Soundsystem is back, back with a new EP that features three more leftfield remixes from curious electronic specialist Enzo Elia that have all been licensed officially by Irma Records. The source material for his three unhinged reworks is a track by 90s Italian house duo Soft House Company and two from cult Italian DJ and producer Don Carlos.

Soft House Company released only two EPs, both in 1990, but made a big impact with them: pretty much everyone has heard ‘What You Need’ and that’s the track that gets remixed here. Elia turns it into a slightly more bouncy and disco leaning cut with raw silvery drums, huge vamping piano chords and those classic vocal cries and already Eddie C and Gerd Jansen have been playing it. At the breakdown there is the sound of waves breaking on a beach before pianos go wild: It’s a freewheeling and sure fire party starting track that still does the trick nearly quarter of a century after original release.

Don Carlos was behind such seminal club tracks as 1991’s ‘Alone’ and produced five studio albums in the nineties and naughties. He fuses Afro rhythms with deep house vibes and has DJed all over the world since the 70s. The first of his to get re-worked is ‘Overture’, which starts with tropical bird cries, whistles and loon calls. It’s the sound of a humid jungle that gets slowly consumed by lush pads, delicate piano melodies and stirring string sounds. With a truly magical atmosphere and uplifting joyousness permeating the whole thing, it cannot fail to make you feel on top of the world.

Finally, Elia tackles ‘Chicago’ (a track that’s already been supported by Soft Rocks) and does so with swathes of mesmeric effects. Organic hand congas, breathy vocal snippets and a bristling nebula of synths, pads and strings all dance around each other in reservedly euphoric symphony.

This might just be one of the most beautifully and bizarrely Balearic releases yet from the ever unhinged Balearic Gabba Soundsystem.

After releasing recently the track “Sexotel” in our compilation RetroFutur, Panthera is backwith a definitively interstellar… cosmic… astral release ! This artist from the south of France has a gift: that of magnifying the analog synthesizers of the 70s/80s with a sensitivity all his own. 

Surely inspired by the founding fathers of a new musical era like Jean Michel Jarre or Hiroshi Yoshimura, Panthera expresses a whole retro culture in his music.

The eponym track “Superchampion” is a beautiful and sensitive track, slow but sure. The perfect track to hit the road and get away from it all along the Côte d’Azur. 

Clarion is cutted for the dancefloor. The rollin bass and the incredible pads/leads are supported by a powerful kick, a sharp snare and an effective rhythm. Close you eyes, it’s time to dance !

To close the original tracks, “Cruising” is so sweet. When you listen to that music, you can’t help but think about 80s TV series full of good feelings like “Arnold & Willy” or “Punky Brewster”. Banger for the heart ! 

The first remixer is none other than David Carretta himself. We are really proud that he agreed to contribute to this release. David brings all his talent in the track “Superchampion” to make it a hit between Italo & EBM. A hopeful story of almost 7 minutes at a time when tracks are unfortunately too short to tell great stories…

The last but not the least, the talentuous Doctr drops the second remix ! And it’s the perfect track to complete the release. As usual, the dutch artist shows his mastery of Italo music. Dropping perfect Batucada percussions to launch the track and during a crazy break, he brings to the original piece a real vintage but modern side ! Amazing !

After reaching out 500 premieres just before our deserved summer break, the first step towards the 1.000th is given today: For the occasion, we had the privilege of reviewing master Diego Montiel’s (SXDNS194) contribution for the forthcoming VA of the still small but highly promising Antwerp-based label Under The Trees, whose curators spared no efforts to bring together a true dream team of acclaimed artists of the so-called Indie Dance/Dark Disco scene. Besides Diego, behold: Alex Aguayo, Andrea Acosta, Bonnie Spacey (SXDNS337) & Rem’s Martinez (SXDNS108), Mundo D, Parissior (SXDNS206), and Sylphomatic (SXDNS354), just to name a few, jumped in with high-quality themes and raised the bar of the compilation by turning it into one of the most solid releases of the year so far.

After appearing on Critical Monday and Side Up Works, his very own hub, Diego continues his 2023 journey by landing on the new Belgium imprint with his characteristic sonority and handling a darkness-infused and eye-shadowed cut that blends some of his most noticeable influences such as Post-Punk, New Wave, Gothic Rock, EBM, and Synthpop, resulting in a dance-floor-oriented piece that lives up to its name.

Norwin P., a very talented producer from Berlin, comes with a trippy and powerful 4-track player and it will be released on 11.07.2024.

With the A-side, Norwin sends us on a minimalist micro-house journey in whichever direction of the universe (maybe all of them!). The track "Manapana" gives the EP its name and is an ingenious mix of driving drums and hypnotising elements in a ro-minimal arrangement and vibe. CVO, label founder, has reinterpreted the tracks and served up a bouncy minimal house variation with a higher pitch.

On the B-side, however, Norwin P. picks up the tempo again and delivers a lush tech house track. "Japanese Karaoke" is the perfect peak time tune for the dance floor and gets everything vibrating.
We are incredibly happy to also welcome Distilled Noise on board with a perfect house interpretation, the teacher of minimal and house production himself. Thank you for this brilliant remix.

Die Vögel are back.
Almost two years after their sensational debut release‚ Blaue Moschee, the arena rocking EP that’s still a permanent fixture in Sven Väth’s record bag, Die Vögel have laid another milestone in the history of club music - the Fratzengulasch EP.
Ground breaking, surreal and captivatingly timeless, this dance music doesn’t give a damn about the laws of gravity and the monotony of everyday routines. 

For some reason or another, there seems to be a sort of restricting fence around the electronic dance music scene at the moment. In true Trojan style, Die Vögel batter and ram the wall until a hole appears; a hole big enough for all the gleely squealing party people to crawl through. Out and on to freedom! It’s a brave new world and help is at hand for the weary of ear. Listen in to the dream-like canons, freely dissonant brass orchestrations and hypnotic-psychedelic beats.

The arrangements are clever, without relying on samples and tried and tested techniques. Off they stroll, Mense Reents and Jakobus Siebels, breathing in the fresh air, enjoying a clear view of a history of nocturnal dance music that goes back beyond 1986 and Chicago and is today international electronic folklore.
It was the machines that taught Die Vögel duo to play their instruments in a different way and from them the machines have learned what makes a musician tick.

That’s how songs like ‚Fratzengulasch’ come about: A tribal meditation, and a beautiful canon sung by Jakobus and Ebba Durstewitz, otherwise known as the band Ja König Ja.

Or the glorious ‚Maikäferbenzin’: There are sub binaural sounds on this track that get your brain hemispheres swinging in perfect synchronicity, on a frequency generally only experienced when in a trance. And there they’re left, swinging away until the last third of the song where an abrupt saxophone break briefly interrupts, only to deliver the listener safely back into an absolute state of bliss and felicity.

Mense and Jakobus’ brilliant Pantha du Prince remix got people wondering but even before that the question cropped up: what is this music?
DJ Koze calls it ‚Sect Funk’.
We say: Pampa style in its purest form!

Taking us on a journey of neo-nostalgia for ZF003 is Northern UK artist REES. Over the past year, he has taken steps in sculpting his own distinct Italo-disco-esque style, taking influence from both his eclectic record collection and extensive touring experiences. The Panoramic Love EP is the culmination of those factors, making a nod to the 80s with a heavy focus on synths and drum workouts.

"This was an entertaining EP to make, the majority was me sitting down in my studio hitting record and jamming until something sat right. There wasn't a huge amount of gear involved just an Arturia Keylab MIDI keyboard, my VSTs and the occasional Roland TR-8" - REES 

Locking us into the dance floor right from the start is the EP's title track, Panoramic Love is a melody-filled electric stunner. Rising arpeggios and extended stabs are what keeps this track on a high-octane energy level. Erimus offers up a piano-led affair, slower but no less emotionally stirring once it reaches its crescendo in the second act. Heading into a more playful territory, Dorman Long delights listeners with bright synth leads, perfect for sun-drenched days. Closing out the release is A66, a melancholic yet hopeful cinematic sonic trek designed to keep feet moving until the morning comes.
