This third compilation album features new recordings by various artists including Ben Harper, Jackson Browne, Shelby Lynne, Victoria Williams, She & Him, Ron Sexsmith, Rickie Lee Jones and Joseph Arthur in support of the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund which provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians who are struggling while facing illness, disability or age-related problems.

Each of the artists on Sweet Relief lll: Pennies from Heaven chose songs with a theme of support and assistance such as “If I Needed You” (Joseph Arthur), “How Did You Find Me Here?” (k.d.  lang), “King of the Road” (She & Him), “Crazy Love” (Ben Harper), “Change is Gonna Come” (Victoria Williams) and “Big Spender” (Sam Phillips) plus many more.

A slow, acoustic-forward Americana take with warm guitars and a sun-dazed, unhurried delivery. No vinyl haze this time — just clean, cozy warmth. This version feels like a record you’d find at a yard sale and fall in love with instantly. The narrator’s shrugging charm comes through clearly, wrapped in soft twang and gentle humor. A quietly confident version that doesn’t try to impress.

Simmering in Winter is a London winter folk album set in the weeks after the decorations come down.

January light, cold rooms, two young kids, and the low-level tension of things left unfinished. It follows a narrator who keeps meaning to apologise, keeps circling it, but never quite says the word. Instead, he explains. He tidies. He waits. He brings the whole world into small domestic moments where what’s really needed is simpler.

Across the album, warmth arrives slowly: a cello moves closer, sunlight stays a little longer on the worktop, windows crack open. Arguments never quite happen, but they’re recognisable — the dishwasher, the clock, Valentine’s handled “sensibly”, sitting closer without saying why. The music stays restrained: flute and bassoon for cold air, cello as the emotional spine, piano only when it’s earned. Nothing resolves cleanly.

This is an album about avoidance, passive aggressive arguments, and British emotional restraint — about knowing exactly what you haven’t said, and learning to live in the space it leaves behind.

It’s pretty ambitious to consider recording a live album of a band that has only played a dozen shows. Capturing the essence of a live performance has managed to elude many, more seasoned acts. Mat. McHugh & The Seperatista Soundsystem have provided a glaring exception to this rule with their brand new LIVE FROM RANDOM HALL release. 

To be fair Mat. has known and played with the other members of that trio for years. Ian Pritchett (on bass) has produced every album Mat. has been involved with in the last decade and Paul Derricoot (on drums) has been a musical foil since playing on Mat’s 2008 album SEPERATISTA.

The sound of LIVE FROM RANDOM HALL is raw, soulful and real. Influenced by a broad range of genres from Hip Hop to Dub to Punk Rock. The album is a testament to the power of live music and puts forward the importance of the connection between performer and crowd.

Recorded in January 2013 across a run of summer shows in Australia,  the album features songs from Mat. McHugh’s recent LOVE COME SAVE ME LP, songs that span his prolific career as one of Australia’s most respected songwriters, as well as a mash-up of the Clash and Beats International’s Guns of Brixton/ Dub Be Good To Me. 

If this is what the band sounds like after a handful of shows the future is an exciting prospect.

LIVE FROM RANDOM HALL will be available digitally on Die Boredom / Controlled Substance Sound Labs in Australia starting June 4, 2013.

Touring July, August, September 2013, with dates and venues to be announced.
