A homage to imperfection and an ode to the process, dedicated to the used, to the worn out. Pure Naked Mind Without Center or Circumference takes it’s name from a line in the Tibetan Book of the Dead that visuales the mind in a state of meditation. The hour-long piece transforms four notes on an electric organ into a mind-numbing mantra, alternating rhythm and speed constantly to generate dynamic transformations while utilizing repetition and layering to maintain peace amongst the chaos.

The piece was recorded using a vintage electric organ across a period of 4 days with the idea of documenting the melodic flow of emotions one experiences while uninhibitedly playing a musical instrument. Pure Naked Mind Without Center or Circumference creates a frantically calming, constantly evolving soundscape that incites personal reflection while submerging the listener in the emotional process of the artist.

A lover of nature, Ryuji was born in 1983 in Ehime, Japan and was raised in a family who ran a piano school in their home. His own musical history includes a stint as a guitarist in a hardcore band. By 2002, Ryuji made a fundamental shift to electronic music, creating tracks to include techno, house, downtempo, ethnic music and rock under the name “O.R.".

Airwaves is a curated podcast series from Tonal Unity, showcasing the music of friends across Asia. For our fifth transmission, we welcome Ume.

Originally from Osaka and currently based in Saigon, Ume began his path as a selector in the underground parties surrounding his hometown. He is a member of Mogra Radio. and his music a delicate soundtrack to the “here and now”.  It is difficult to attribute it to any single genre. It is a reflection of a moment in time, atmosphere, and mood of music lovers around.  His sets are always filled with rhythmic grooves, extravagance, and echoes from different cultures and worlds.

This mix was inspired by old films and traditional performances all over the world.  The theme keeps cherishing the old, while acquiring new knowledge.
