What is "Instinctive Drowning"?  It is the idea the we imagine those drowning to flail and scream but the reality of drowning is often complete silence and stillness - an inability to move or make sound.  This is sometimes how we find those around us - smiling, appearing normal but the world pushing them under, the current taking them away.

In the 11th hour of making The Audience's Listening, I swapped the music out from this funky break beat to a psychedelic post punk drum machine.  At the time I was looking to reinvent myself and I saw this as the perfect opportunity to do so.  I couldn't be happier with how the final product turned out.  It's fun to go back and listen to what Edan and Lif actually recorded their verses to. This is more of a "classic" Cut Chemist production that one might recognize from the late 90s/early 2000s." -Cut Chemist

There is a piece from every release I ever put out from 1992 to 2002 in this mix from a UCLA art student cd release, an underground rap compilation cassette,  J5, Ozomatli, mix cds with Shadow, remixes, etc...its all in there. I encourage folks to identify any piece you can.. Ill help with the hard ones.

In the last few months, I've been excavating old cassettes from the "Mom's House" era. This installment is a simple sample tape from 1993. Sample tapes are what I used to make in order to remember which loop ideas I liked as I listened to records I either just got or had sitting around for a while. Most are just one element. There are a couple of layered arrangements as well which means I had high hopes they would turn into something. Happy to say a couple of these samples found nice homes as you may recognize.
