Big City Life (Broken Beat Version) [Free Download]

A little while ago I gave away my nu disco version of Big City Life which is one of my favourite recent freebies. Before I did that mix, I'd put together this broken beat version that was the starting point for the nu disco mix. It's a bit more chilled & less dance floor than the nu disco version. I've played it a bunch of times & it works great but it's been sitting on my hard drive not doing anything. So I've given it a once over & now I'm sharing it with every one! ENJOY!

Big City Life (D-Funk's Broken Beat Version) *Free Download*

Not many people want to take on remixing the hip-hop anthem "Flamboyant" by Big L? If something ain't broke, don't fix it right?

Well, this remix holds a special place in the heart of its creator. Inspired by his good friend Sam Banham who sadly passed away, the sample used for the instrumental (originally used by Rawcotiks) featured on a skate video featuring Sam. 

Roast recalls. "That track means so much, too so many people. Purely because of Sam's amazing skating and how dope the skate scene in Brighton was as the time of filming." 

One night, after watching Sam's part, Roast decided to have a play with the sample. 

After remaking the track and staying true to the Rawcotiks version, it only seemed right to fuse an acapella from Big L Flamboyant over it. A track from an album that was consistently on repeat around the same time the video part was made.

The result, a homage to Roast's old skateboarding compadre whom will never be forgotten and a head nod to the Hip Hop era that accompanied Roast during his time living in Brighton in the late 90's and early 2000's.

With the epic funky debut EP from Sonale dropping earlier this year - we just had to invite him back for a second EP drop. Ill Vibes EP consists of 4 ultra funky badboy bangers of progressive funky breaks with lots og big basslines and smooth funky grooves.
Outside the catchy funk flows these bangers are providing a danceable 4-to-the-floor beat structure, while still staying true to the breaks and sticking in the sweet spot for midtempo bangers that the Ghetto Funk scene is firmly built on.
Perfect example of that is the title tune: Ill Vibe which kicks things off with a steady banging beat and some classic rap vocal cuts. Keep It Funky picks up the tempo and the party grooves with some fresh vibes and vocoder vocals. I Want You brings things back to the low-slung midtempo arrangements while keeping the funky grooves in the forefront before slamming on some heavy duty ghetto basslines.
