In 1983 I got a couple of tapes from the East Coast, and they blew my mind.  DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, and Soulsonic Force were on those tapes.  I had never heard anything so cool in my life.  I listened to them so much I had to make copies because the tapes were fading.  

I didn't care the music wasn't on the radio, it never even occurred to me what I was hearing was 'underground' - to me it was just great music.  Without realizing it I grew up listening to the original hip-hop coming out of the Bronx in New York, and it became a key influence on my music.

It wasn't until I had a chance to reflect on these roots that I even made the connection.  'A-1 B-Boy' definitely was inspired by those masters of the original hip-hop sound. Anyone familiar with that scene will recognize the vibe and the mixing style.
