While we’re sitting at our desks, producing drum loops, recording tracks and playing basslines, a lot of people out there are struggling to get their fundamental needs fulfilled. Social inequality is on the rise and there are currently thousands of people who are fleeing from war, persecution or enviromental catastrophes all over the world.

A few of these people are trying to find a new and safe home in Europe. Right now, there are more than 40.000 of them trapped in European refugee camps like in Moria on the Greek island of Lesbos. This is a camp with inhuman conditions and no mercy. They are overcrowded, refugees are malnourished with no solid places to sleep, and no medical care. People stuck on the island aren't only facing a scabies epidemic, but also the fast-spreading Covid-19 virus, without any regular distribution of soap or even running water.

However, there are people trying to better the conditions for these travelers, like the organization No Border Kitchen. "No Border Kitchen Lesvos is a self-organised group of independent individuals who maintain a solidarity structure on the Greek Island of Lesvos. The main purpose of the collective is to support travellers who are unable to progress with their journey due to European migratory policies. Through a praxis based on mutual aid and solidarity, we take a stand against border policies and the suffering they are causing. Alongside providing basic needs, we are trying to offer a viable alternative to the way travellers are treated by mainstream NGO’s, governments, and local authorities, which is often characterised by condescension, coupled with a dehumanising and infantilising attitude.” (1)

As a collective, we felt the need to contribute something to this solidarity. That’s why every Euro you pay for this release will be donated to No Border Kitchen. No donation is too small, and each one is an act of kindness and is a motion forward to achieving social justice for all.

We want to give some extra shoutouts and love to every single person involved in this project, you know who you are!

Zoltan Fecso is a composer based in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. With previous releases on Hush Hush Records, Sonder House, The Slow Music Movement and Shimmering Moods, Whitelabrecs is thrilled to present Zoltan’s most restrained work to date on ‘Daylight in an Empty Room.’

Zoltan’s pointillist compositions combine single notes of varying lengths to form ever-changing patterns. A composition technique he’s been exploring since 2018, Pointillism borrows its name from the post-impressionist painting technique which uses individually coloured dots to form an image. Zoltan’s works are performed on a modified guitar, on which he captures fragments of notes, creating ever-shifting tonal permutations.

‘Daylight in an Empty Room’ is an album of solo guitar improvisations, in which Zoltan has aimed to create a more open, spacious sound than in previous records. Zoltan works closely with his partner and painter Claire Lefebvre, who created the artwork for this album. ‘Daylight in an Empty Room’ suggests finding new detail in simplicity.

It is a work that reexamines ambient music, which has recently become more subjective and too much development.

If you listen to it on the highway late at night, it will either make your head clear or put you to sleep.
