"Here at Distant Signals Laboratories, we are excited to present our recent discovery of an exoplanet with quite unusual gravitational properties. Lead scientist on the project, boxofbox, has obtained a gravimetric recording for analysis and reports their findings below:

In March 2023, our Advanced LIGO detectors were able to hear a planetoid body in the star system Phustrus, 2.7 Gpc, Earth relative. The planetoid, hereafter deemed Aephus.5722.27a appears to be near the Roche limit with its star and the system also possesses a rapid, secondary, 0.5-hourly orbit around a nearby black hole, NGX-HL 3777. Over time this binary system has apparently forced the planetoid’s bulk into a bi-lobular conical form (confirmed by Vortex coronagraph), the most directly measurable consequence of which is that Aephus.5722.27a possesses multiple meta-stable gravitational norms. We hypothesize from the obtained recording that the beings of Aephus are attuned to this multiples-of-gravity effect as evidenced by the musical artifact extracted from the LIGO recording, as this “music” appears to express simultaneous, approximately integer-multiple, polyrhythmic tempos (61.1±10g, 90±5.2g, & 180±12.7g are the three most significant and consistently detectable of these quasi-static gravities) .

There appears to be some periodic (perhaps anxious) temporal dissonances (we’ve termed this ‘almost-clangs’) indicated by moments where the metastable time slips, degrades, and recalibration occurs in the recording. We hypothesize that this has to do with the difficulty in maintaining a planet-wide clock and rhythm synchronization with the relativistic effects. Alternatively, this could be a result of large scale gravitational fluctuations due to changes in angular momentum given the measured axial precession wobble.


During rare moments in its dual orbit, Aephus.5722.27a is at apogee with both NGX-HL 3777 and Phustrus; here we calculate an overall period of planetary “weightlessness” as the gravity goes below detectable levels during these periods. This has been difficult for us to precisely measure as it nearly always coincides with an Earth-NGX/Aephus syzygy, introducing significant gravitational distortional that temporarily blocks our detector. Yet finally, we are fortunate with this latest recording, as we were able to capture the onset of one of these events; the sudden breakdown of any discernible temporal consistency near the end of the recording seems to correspond to this event. A list of all our extracted measurements is provided in the tracklist appendix."

Smooth Brain Sunday 11 (Nov 2023)

This mix pushes my practice further than I believe I've ever gone before, folding rock, ambient, spoken word, and percussion into a post-western story of planetary exploration.

Lately, I've caught myself digging deeper into my past as a percussionist and writer. I played drumline (tenors) from 2009-2013, built instruments and wrote songs in a DIY/Stomp-inspired band called Groove (2013-2017), and trained across marimba, steel pan, vibraphone, and timpani. I also wrote a series of seven science fiction books in high school fueled primarily by Avatar the Last Airbender and queer escapism. The series was called Matter, and allowed me to craft worlds, personalities, heartbreak, and outlining (without me really realizing it) the belief that, collectively, the people we put ourselves in relation to help us build the world we want to live in.

Because of this, this set starts with a 1991 rendition on "The Songlines" from the Robert Hohner Perc. Ensemble—from a gift my percussion teacher gave me around 2010 or so. From there, all tracks come from the 21st century (there is good to be found here!), including two new pieces from myself that score an upcoming film I'm making titled Prednisone. The goal is to launch you from land to sky to space, see some planets, find some havens, heal wounds, purge toxins, and return home.

January is the start of a new year: a reset, fresh chapter, closing the door on what no longer serves you. A chance to set a timed measure of your goals and set routines to live the best version of yourself. 

This mix depicts the spectrum of feelings and internal conflict over the course of the year that still lingers in your body. Unexpected love, joy, and wonder will come your way. So will disorder, pain, and death. It is not easy to cope with changes - you will sometimes resort back to old ways. Find the balance of accepting this while letting go to be who you want to be. Most importantly, give yourself flowers while you can still smell them!
