This time around, Amerigo takes on James Brown in The Big Payback Vol lll. In the third and latest offering from "The Big Payback" summer mix series, the producer follows the exceptionally awesome first and second volumes from the legendary DJ Scratch and master craftsman, J. Period.  

Bringing together a fantasy league of all-stars for his "J.B. and The Soul Mates" tribute concept, the producer's latest offers an alternative to the sometimes uninspired, profit-driven, posthumously released albums. 

With guest appearances from Bob Marley, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Fela Kuti, The Notorious B.I.G., Mobb Deep, and more, Amerigo pays tribute to the God Father of Soul with a re-imagined set of co-conspirators.

"I'm not sure any other artist has left their imprint on popular music, especially across so many genres, as much as James Brown has.  With as many of today's hit songs that were built around some sort of James Brown flip, it's almost like he had a say in what the music of future generations would sound like without even knowing it."

The Notorious J.B.'s - Sex Machine Gun Funk (Soul Mates Remix)



Back once again on the funk merry-go-round, Bumper introduces their new Take Me To The Dancefloor EP for Homebreakin Records. Formed by Geoffrey T and Mr. Pauli to combat the un-funky tides creeping up on the world's shore, the Netherlands duo's sound is the re-funky movement in full effect. Classic slabs of electro-funk get a little elbow grease for future shine and the resulting presentation makes for dance floor trophies like "Take Me To The Dancefloor" and "Body On My Mind". On the title track, a wailing wall of synths, an elastic bass line, and an out-of-this world use of the vocoder mimic the calling card of freshly touched down extraterrestrials who forgo 'our leader' for the dance floor. "Body On My Mind" is equally intergalactic, but taken from a much more primal sexual encounter. Egyptian Lover-esque, the sleazily whispered vocal musings sit atop plenty of cowbell, unwinding electric organs, and drums certified to make hips dip.

Remixers Julian Sanza and Elijah Collins leave no unfinished business as they repurpose "Take Me To The Dancefloor". Julian Sanza made a name for himself as part of Argentinian duo Silver City before joining with Ralph Lawson and Danny Ward as the infamous 2020 Soundsystem. He adds nu-disco flair in his take with glamorous guitar work and additional toe steppin' rhythm. Elijah Collins has seen plenty of success in the charts, even finding his way into Lenny Kravitz's lone Beatport Top 10 … go figure! On his remix of the title track, a spastic electric guitar works its way into a bigger, club adjusted bass line. Exaggerated stabs and effects come flying at the listener making for a heavily charged and hard-to-place electro tinged affair.

Ijsbrand & Gert had always wanted to create balkan inspired music, and hence came the duo Stavroz. Beyond just sharing the same musical tastes, these two buddies bond over both being sound engineers (live for Ijs, studio for Gert), which makes them real "goldsmiths" behind each and every production (such can be seen in this short clip which presents their title 'The Ginning'). 
Their music is imprinted with original inspirations while keeping to a jazzy/burlesque influence, leaving little to be left displeased. The bridge, so it seems, borderlines between minimal and jazz-house.

The first title of the EP, 'The Ginning' is constructed around guitarist, Max Honckelinx. The track’s instrumental harmony is skilfully constructed by the duo as they borderline minimal and deep house.

The second original title of the EP, 'The Finishing' is merely a dialogue between a rhythmic stratospheric universe and the sax of Nathan Daems, well preserved from the first studio recording. The end result leaves us with 8 minutes of lyricism soaked in sophistication and technicality.

In regards to the remixes, Felkon, who has been presented several times before on the Délicieuse, takes on 'The Ginning' by including vocals which create a more dance-like ambiance. 
Britta Arnold, a legendary pioneer from Bar 25 and Katerholzig, worked on 'The Ginning' as well with Sascha Cawa. They delivered a version more obscure yet wickedly effective.

As for the remixes of 'The Finishing', Powel continues to captivate us while executing his deep and melancholic twists. He entirely redesigns the piece’s structure by retiring the "voice" of the sax. 
And then there’s our man, Viken Arman, who spins his version of 'The Finishing' by refiguring the rhythm pattern and adding a new dimension to the bass.
