"The influence and presence of trap and rap in dance/experimental is obviously massive, and the lines between genres are more blurred than ever. HAJJ, however, says this is a recent thing; “I find that the electronic scene in France is just starting to encourage the integration of this culture. Not so long ago people insulted me when I played rap/trap in my sets.”

The underpinning idea for this compilation brought electronic producers not explicitly of that world to unpick whatever boundaries remain and contribute tracks for a mixtape – while a few of the artists are more obviously ready to “play the game” and already make music which exists pretty close to this horizon, this has been a challenge to think creatively for a few of the other artists invited."

The ninth show in the Cyrk series ‘Pattern Compulsions’ curated for Resonance 104.4FM, is an exclusive mix by multidisciplinary artist Mark Fell.
Mark is a multidisciplinary artist based in Sheffield (UK). After studying experimental film and video art at the local polytechnic he reverted to earlier interests in computational technology, music and synthetic sound. In 1998 he initiated a series of critically acclaimed releases, featuring both collaborative and solo works, on labels including Mille Plateaux, Line, Editions Mego, Raster Noton and Alku.

Although working in electronic and techno music traditions, Mark’s practice has become increasingly informed by non-European musics. This is evident in two recent linked works “Multistablity” and “UL8” which explore a number of unfamiliar timing and tuning systems. Uncut magazine called these “completely mind-blowing” and the Wire said these were “amazing”.

As well as recorded works Mark also produces installation pieces often using multispatial speaker technologies. His work in this area is characterized by ‘non illusion based’ approaches to surround sound environments. This methodology became prominent in a work commissioned by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (Vienna) in collaboration with Roc Jiménez de Cisneros in 2008. For this the two artists developed a 48 speaker piece that rejected complex three dimensional panning systems in favour of spatially static synthetic sound. Critically Mark’s work is informed by Western philosophy, especially the writings of Heidegger and Wittgenstein.

"Celebrating otherness, E B U casts a universe of her own both sonically and visually. Defying any one genre, she refers to her distinct sound as 'Swamp Pop'. Unnatural sounds and pitches exhale in melodic chants, ominous basslines resound and eerie loops fixate in this macabre ensemble. You are captive in her world. Moments of haunting clarity keep you wondering where she will take you next whilst strange narratives unfold. Her chameleonic visual display is charged with emotion, keeping you suspended in a state of flux as she orbits through the spectrum. Stimulated by human behaviour and existence she questions the very nature of being, and invites the audience to explore through her cathartic performance."

To our ears, her sound captures elements of the radiophonic qualities by electronic pioneers such as Delia Derbyshire, through to unlikely melody and harmony akin to that of Ryuchi Sakamoto or Laurie Anderson. 

It's an explorations of strange places with a weird & wonderful sphere, sonically capturing the colourful intensity of Alejandro Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain, or perhaps sounding like a much more out-there, much more convincingly extra-terrestrial Space lady... These are just vague comparisons though... Essentially, her sound is a total world of it's own. 

Hinge, E B U's debut album, is an outer body experience that will conjure up memories you never had before, images you can't quite place but somehow relate to, and a sense of sweet disorientation as you slip into a whirlpool of shapeshifting melody, harmony and frequency.

Created by the italian musician, visual artist and independent researcher Francesco D'Abbraccio, @l_o_r_e_m is a music-driven multidisciplinary project working with neural networks and artificial intelligence systems producing sounds, visuals and texts with a focus on politics of representation and transmedial culture.
His first stunning work “Adversarial Feelings” explores the perception of human emotion through 22 min AV piece plus 9 music tracks and has been released by @krisispublishing , an independent and curatorial platform focusing on the impact of media culture on contemporary societies.
Coming from a recent collaboration with De Santis Shabara for the realization of "A thousand Steps”, Lorem reworked the archaic sound of the original tracks providing an AI-generated short-movie.

fmvee joins Queeste with who do u love?, an EP of fractious songs recorded over a tumultuous four-month period in Los Angeles. Having debuted in 2018 with a set of club contortions touching on jungle and 2-step, the US artist returns with a work of intense self-reflection. Lived experiences are transmuted into an amorphous bricolage of pummelling kicks, synthetic textures, and diaristic details, what they describe as an act of “remembrance.”

Working and living in LA, the “grind” alongside “aspirational partying,” and the confrontation of depression during an intense relationship, informs the EP on levels both sonic and thematic. The slippery rhythm and melodic stabs of ‘the way you see yourself’ embodies a state of flux, also recalling the early experiments of the LA beat scene. Distant jazz drumming fills its peaceful coda before ‘everythingUneverKnewUwanted’ introduces an echo lifted directly from the artist’s life: a trickling courtyard fountain. This first phase of the release finds resolution with ‘thewayothersseeyou,’ a conceptual mirror to its start, and one which carries a notable shift in tone; gleaming percussion has given way to ominous synths.

Despite the EP’s personal nature, collaboration is crucial. ‘Seed Perfuming (LoLo v665)’ is an fmvee original transformed into a cascading breakbeat by New York producer and engineer Loric Sih AKA LoLo, an ecstatic yet familiar form nestled amidst otherwise bruising encounters. ‘sobbing’ follows, a digital-age ballad of original lyrics exploring dependency: emotional, physical, and otherwise. It’s a poignant conclusion to an appropriately hallucinogenic collection, an intoxicating chemistry of love and loneliness conjured through a fine balance of bass, percussion, discord, and harmony.

On behalf of fmvee, a percentage of all profits will be donated to Baltimore Harm Reduction Coalition, a community-based organisation that mobilises community members for the health, dignity, and safety of people targeted by the war on drugs and anti sex-worker policies.
