That event inspired me to get in the studio & make my own take on it. I'm a huge fan of Flodan, the UK grime artist & the vocals used here come from his sample pack. He's got a great voice & I tried to use it in a interesting way.'

'My Nikes' *Free Download*

This week I had the opportunity to witness something that, like a time machine, took me back to the days I used to drive to San Francisco just to go see my favorite DJs perform. Two legends from those days were randomly playing at a little club on WIlshire Blvd in Koreatown. I really mean legends: Miguel Migs and Jay-J on the same bill. I hadn't seen these two play together one after the other at the same gig in over 20 years. They certainly didn't disappoint and both played exceptionally good. 

The music was amazing all night and really brought back that West Coast sound that I fell in love with so many years ago. They didn't play a throwback set or classics (just a couple here and there) but mainly new music from them and from all over the world but that had that 'West Coast' sound vibe. 

Listening to these two maestros (and friends) inspired me to do an episode similar to what I heard that night at their gig. These are also all new tracks that just came out but that have that San Francisco sound vibe from the good ole' days by artists from all over the globe.

There's something special about Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club, especially on Halloween, and, there's something really special about this set. It's our first official collaboration, and brings me full circle to connection through music. 

Rommy and I can’t stop playing and sharing music. We worked on this set together from 200 miles away; he traveled to me to practice, and we laid it down for a packed dance floor at the same venue where we met 5 months ago. 

The set spans many of the genres we jointly love and fuses the sounds we've shared with each other. 

If solidarity and resistance can be expressed through art, then maybe our collaboration can be an embodied resistance to the idea that Palestinians and Jews must be at war. And, if we get Hermetic with it — as within so without — perhaps our union of tastes and sounds can emanate outward and heal some shit. Music is the answer to problems, right? 

And, maybe this is just a fun multi-genre dance set. More likely, it’s all of the above. 

We hope you fucking LOVE it. We fucking loved playing it.

Review
Since debuting in 2017, Stephen Richards has notched up releases on many of the nu-disco and re-edit scene's most checked imprints. Here he makes his bow on another, Fingerman's Hot Digits music. The three Richards originals on offer sound like hybrid productions, where his original beats and instrumentation are joined by samples from vintage disco and soul cuts. There's much to admire, from the mid-tempo, break-driven nu-disco colour of 'Winter Sunshine', where mazy synth sounds, dewy-eyed female vocal samples and laidback disco guitars catch the ear, to the Italian disco-meets-Italo-disco squelch of 'Gynoid' and the layered nu-disco warmth of 'Beat Don't Stop'. Chewy Rubs reworks 'Winter Sunshine', beefing it up and pitching it up to house-tempo while utilising his favourite bits of Richards' original mix.

I really like the remix & Kylie's vocal are amazing (as you'd expect). In 2015 I released ‘Old Skool Ting’ on the awesome Perth (Western Australia) based Rump Shaker Records. A great break beat label run by The Beatslappaz. I can’t quite believe it been a decade since it came out! Over the last couple of years I’ve been reconnecting with my UK rave culture roots, which lead to me putting together ‘My Rave Tape' (https://soundcloud.com/d-funk/myravetape), a mix that features my favourite & most influential tunes from my raving days in the 90s. Recently Triple J challenged producers to complete an unfinished Flume track, offering a blank canvas for any style. Hearing Flume's raw, heavy bass stems, I immediately gravitated towards a UK bass and grime direction, but with my signature breakbeat influence.

To capture that authentic UK vibe, I incorporated vocals from the newly released Flodan sample pack (yes, those vocals – but they fit perfectly). The result? A bass-bin shaking monster, packed with intricate sound design, complex basslines, and driving, energetic beats.

Again I wasn't lucky enough to win the Triple J competition so now I'm giving my version away for free. Not sure how long it will last before it gets taken down so grab it whilst you can!

I was meant to be doing 1 free down every month this year but recently life stuff got in the way & I got sidetracked. I'll do my best to catch up with a few extra freebies over the coming months. 

Here's one my tried & tested bangers from the vaults. I've played this so much over the years & it's always worked a treat! In fact I made this to play at Break da House, the breaks & electro night we used to do in UK so it's an older edit. I lost the original project file so this is the edit I've been using. As they say it's an oldie but a goodie! 

The original (Hey You) What's That Sound was released in 1999 & became one of the instant classic electro tracks of that period. Les Rythmes Digitales, who's actually called Stuart Price, also produced as Jacques La Cont (amongst others) & went on to produce for Madonna & they made the Abba sampling 'Hung Up'.

BIO :
Cape Town-based artist Nemeni — known to many as DJ Nemeton — is a dynamic sonic storyteller with a deep love for rolling beats, infectious desert melodies, and gritty, driving basslines.

Building a loyal following under his DJ moniker, Nemeton made his mark through electrifying sets at festivals, clubs and iconic local venues. His groovy, high-energy performances blend desert techno, indie dance, and progressive house into an uplifting, boundary-breaking experience.

Nemeni - Kanda [Python VIP Records]

Sydney-based, British born DJ, D-Funk has amassed a fair few achievements in his 25-years on the decks. Making his club debut at The Depot in Bristol in 1995, he’s gone on to DJ all over the world, playing notable sets at Space Ibiza and Ministry Of Sound and released on labels including Sunday Best and Bombstrikes. 

Getting his first set of decks at 14, Doug initially fell for the sounds of jungle and techno before a night dancing to house icon Tony De Vit in 1997 turned him towards the slinkier sounds of house music. 

His DJ career began to take off during his time at university in Wolverhampton where he started to pick up gigs at the Canal Club and Mezzanine, playing alongside DJs including Joey Negro, Mr Fingers, Scott Bond and Lisa Lashes, before a move to the South-Coast town of Bournemouth led him to eventually start his own night ‘Break Da House’ in 2004. 

The night took off, attracting big names including The Stanton Warriors and Plump DJs and eventually led to D-Funk’s first release, the ‘Electrotek’ EP after Dub Pistols headlined one night and Barry Ashworth from the band decided to release Doug’s music on his Westway label. The track found its way onto a TV ad in Portugal, as well as becoming a mainstay on Kiss FM’s breakbeat chart and gave Doug the confidence to pursue a career as a producer as well as a DJ, eventually leading to releases on Adapted Records and Ghetto Funk among countless other labels over the next 15 years. 

Moving to Sydney Australia in 2009, Doug started his label Upstart Music, releasing his own productions alongside tracks from the likes of Crackerz & Jam, Niko & Lyall and Rogue Robot and later started the funk label Grits N Gravy alongside friend and funk producer Philly Blunt, with the label winning the ‘Best Label’ award at Perth Dance Music Awards in 2010. 

Since living in Sydney, Doug has held down residencies at The World Bar and The Standard/Middlebar for the best part of a decade, as well as regular slots at Sash, Ivy, Goros, Hugos and many others. He’s played events for high profile companies such as Blackberry, Telstra, Jagermeister,  Sydney Cricket Ground & Saatchi & Saatchi. But there was still demand for him back on the side of the world and he regularly returned to Europe to play at Space Ibiza (including a set at the penultimate night of Carl Cox’s Revolution party) as well as touring in the UK, Europe, Asia and Canada. 

Now 25 years into his career, Doug is about to mark the 10th anniversary of his label Grits ‘N’ Gravy, with a compilation due this year mixed by himself and Philly Blunt, and has been busy producing house, hip hop and nu-disco with his current production partner Mr Doris.
