Goldtop Drum & Bass Guest Mix 29 // Legacy Sound System

Recently I had a debate with someone about the term "liquid". He feels it's become an outdated term to describe what's basically become 75% of all DNB music produced today, and in a way he's right. I've long stopped worrying whether "liquid" actually describes what I play in these sessions. Instead I use the term loosely, mostly to set some sort of expectation of what you'll be hearing from me. In all practicality, I like to play across the board. It's deep, it's soulful, it's techy at times, it's dark minimal at others. It's abstract, it's jazzy, it's rolling, it's dancefloor, it's peak time stuff, it's afterhours stuff. Mainly I want it all to make sense in relation to each other. I'm less concerned about what to exactly call it. It's like that famous saying "House is a feeling"... Maybe "Liquid" is also a feeling and not just a specific sound? To be continued...

It was a gloomy day in Georgia and I'm pretty sure this played into my selection choices for this session. After a couple of weeks of pretty energetic rolling sets, this one kind of took a more subdued turn. Deep and melodic liquid rollers at the beginning into some mid-energy biz, into some minimal style rollers. Threw in some tech flavored joints for the second hour as well as some grimy bassline rollers and ended with saccharine tech R&B vibes. Not a lot of the usual banter in the chat room today but the number of people who dropped in or were logged and lurking was still solid. Shouts to the new followers as well as my OG LLL gang!

Liquid Lovers Lounge (EP97|APR08|2023)

The 2 hour format of this stream is one I've become so accustomed to  over time that I've fallen into some kind of well-worn routine of how I approach filling the time. The downside of that is that when I play IRL gigs and I only have one hour to fill, I have a hard time jumping right into the explosive sound and pacing you need to catch and hold the attention of say, a festival crowd. I've been digging through my collection and building more expansive playlists than I normally would in order to force myself out of my comfort zone and try out different set structures, but also to play the type of energetic tunes I tend to avoid sometimes. Sometimes the experiments work, sometimes they don't, but it's always an entertaining endeavor trying to find out.

It was nice to be back in the saddle for EP 99 of LLL this week. First hour started out on a somewhat airy atmospheric tip into futuristic "sci fi rollers" and some minimal tech stuff. Moving into the second hour we go from minimal to more driving dancefloor tunes. Spacey electro rave vibes make way for some chopped future jungle kinda stuff at the end. Got some feelgood rollers at the start, kind of atmospheric and soulful, moves into more driving liquid and about halfway into tech-inspired rollers. Dips down into more minimal wobblers during hour two before ramping back up into more soaring dancefloor rave territory towards the end. The SNG record label has been  consistently pushing the best quality atmospheric, funky, soulful, and rolling vibes in drum n bass since 2016. And we love their releases so much! Christal is the label co/owner of the prominent Drum & Bass label - Smooth N Groove Records alongside Clen. The label is based out of Northampton, UK and Washington DC, USA. Smooth N Groove Records launched in May 2016 opening with their first release, Jrumhand’s Beaches & Countryside.

Smooth N Groove Records is a Drum & Bass label dedicated to bringing atmospheric, Funky, Soulful, rolling vibez from the best in the scene to the ears of all listeners. Since its conception Smooth N Groove has established a respectable place within the scene with full support from their peers and an ever growing fan base.

Chris has been running a club night since 2018 alongside Soul Deep Recordings head honcho, Scott Allen, Clen and John Crossland, AKA SoulStructure. Appropriately named Soul Deep vs Smooth N Groove, representing artists from both labels to perform at their events. They have also taken the Soul Deep vs Smooth N Groove brand to the west coast of America hosting events in Los Angeles at Respect, and San Francisco at Stamina.

The next Soul Deep vs Smooth N Groove is planned to take place at Club 43, Northampton, UK, on August 5th.

D:RC came up DJing (mostly drum'nbass) in the mid-90s while attending the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. As founding member of the local Phungus, Playtheavy and Sleuth Empire crews he found himself at the center of a burgeoning rave scene, collaborating with friends on dance music events in the Athens/Atlanta areas and beyond.

In 2004 he founded Studio:Machina, a graphic design practice geared towards the music industry. Building on his behind the scenes expertise and keen artistic instincts he's become an in-demand contributor on artistic projects in a variety of media. He's toured the US as member of the Smookie Illson bass music trio, serves as creative director for the Chicago-based Illeven:Eleven Recordings label and functions as brand/art director of several nightlife concepts. 

Behind the decks he currently heavily favors the sounds of DNB, but brief forays into breakbeat, house, UK Garage + Bass and dubstep are not uncommon. Get to know.
