LIVE On Bassdrive March 8th 2023

For the last week or so I've been digging through my music collection trying to get ready for some upcoming festival type gigs. The sad reality is that most of the stuff I play in these LLL sessions wouldn't fly on a festival stage. Most of the nuance and sophistication of deeper music is lost in that type of setting, where all that matters is the amount of energy you bring. Most people who see me play know that I have zero charisma behind the decks so I need to let the music do all the talking if I'm gonna be perceived as remotely adequate in those situations.

So if you hear part of this session veer into uncharacteristically pop dancefloor drum & bass territory, you at least know what's going on 🤣. I feel like there's a happy medium in there somewhere but it's a constant work in progress...

Shoutout to the new followers and everyone who came to hang with me on Saturday despite all the other Twitch events happening that day. These streams are still the best way for me to gauge what I'm doing as a DJ and for coming up with ideas that might translate into my IRL sets. Cheers!

It was a gloomy day in Georgia and I'm pretty sure this played into my selection choices for this session. After a couple of weeks of pretty energetic rolling sets, this one kind of took a more subdued turn. Deep and melodic liquid rollers at the beginning into some mid-energy biz, into some minimal style rollers. Threw in some tech flavored joints for the second hour as well as some grimy bassline rollers and ended with saccharine tech R&B vibes. Not a lot of the usual banter in the chat room today but the number of people who dropped in or were logged and lurking was still solid. Shouts to the new followers as well as my OG LLL gang!

Liquid Lovers Lounge (EP97|APR08|2023)

The 2 hour format of this stream is one I've become so accustomed to  over time that I've fallen into some kind of well-worn routine of how I approach filling the time. The downside of that is that when I play IRL gigs and I only have one hour to fill, I have a hard time jumping right into the explosive sound and pacing you need to catch and hold the attention of say, a festival crowd. I've been digging through my collection and building more expansive playlists than I normally would in order to force myself out of my comfort zone and try out different set structures, but also to play the type of energetic tunes I tend to avoid sometimes. Sometimes the experiments work, sometimes they don't, but it's always an entertaining endeavor trying to find out.

It was nice to be back in the saddle for EP 99 of LLL this week. First hour started out on a somewhat airy atmospheric tip into futuristic "sci fi rollers" and some minimal tech stuff. Moving into the second hour we go from minimal to more driving dancefloor tunes. Spacey electro rave vibes make way for some chopped future jungle kinda stuff at the end. D:RC came up DJing (mostly drum'nbass) in the mid-90s while attending the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. As founding member of the local Phungus, Playtheavy and Sleuth Empire crews he found himself at the center of a burgeoning rave scene, collaborating with friends on dance music events in the Athens/Atlanta areas and beyond.

In 2004 he founded Studio:Machina, a graphic design practice geared towards the music industry. Building on his behind the scenes expertise and keen artistic instincts he's become an in-demand contributor on artistic projects in a variety of media. He's toured the US as member of the Smookie Illson bass music trio, serves as creative director for the Chicago-based Illeven:Eleven Recordings label and functions as brand/art director of several nightlife concepts. 

Behind the decks he currently heavily favors the sounds of DNB, but brief forays into breakbeat, house, UK Garage + Bass and dubstep are not uncommon. Get to know.
