Et tel un condamné, j’entends leur psalmodie
Gémir à demi-mots leur sourde messe-basse
Tombant à gros flocons dans l’hiver infini,
Ressusciter sans cesse un passé qui se glace.
 
Aux âmes condamnées, l’enfer est ici-bas.
Les regrets éternels sont, plus que tout, vivants
Quand ils rongent l’espoir dont l’unique combat
Est de cautériser les jambes du présent.
 
Mais quand revient le soir, loin des bruits de la ville,
Que la folle vitrine amusant le passant
Remet le fond de tain d’un miroir indocile,
J’y revois, impuissant, le passé lancinant.
 
Puis dans ce grand mouchoir qui se prend pour mon lit,
J’allonge ma défaite, inutile d’aisance,
Comme si en dormant, les conseils de la nuit
Allaient soudain venir dans ce port de plaisance.
