Hive’s ‘Neo’ already has a special place in ‘Nightlife’ legend: it appeared on Andy’s debut mix. Rebooted by none other than Audio, it’s been updated with cutlass clarity. Beautifully brutal, heroically heavyweight: Audio never, ever disappoints. 

‘Misfits’ is a tag-team tear-up from Ram-signees June Miller and their regular partner in crime Nymfo. Icy angularities abound as we launch with a spooked out lead melody that drops us headfirst into a gnarly, spiked out bass riff and a sharp steppy riddim. 

Unknown Error provides the lush contrast every ‘Nightlife’ mix is famed for. Soul-laden from its ignition, Janine Small’s emphatic vocals cut through the jazz-minded chords with stunning effect. Propelled by some stunning drum sounds and gorgeous piano work, you can file this one under timeless. 

Xtrah completes this first instalment with a bona fide hurter; whether it’s the rushy vocal and hardcore twinkles of the intro that hits you hardest or his incredible attention to detail on the percussive groove, this sums up why Xtrah has achieved the spotless scene status he’s achieved in such a short time.

Deep in sonic solitude, they’ve pushed themselves to whole new levels… As proved by the stunning ‘Empathy’ and ‘Operation Ivy’. Both pivotal tracks on Andy C’s explosively extensive ‘Nightlife 6’ opus, these cuts represent June Miller’s chiselled production skills like never before. 

We kick off with ‘Empathy’. Igniting with a surging sense of soul, the unity of timeless synths and spellbinding vocals set a smouldering scene that’s suddenly shattered into gnarled fragments when the drop lands. An overwhelming bass riff scuffs across the blistering breakbeats to create a thunderous groove. Instant riot material, this has been tried and tested by Andy C since the summer, each airing causing unparalleled commotion in its wake. 

‘Operation Ivy’ complements the carnage perfectly. A jittering, snake-like roller with deep funk coded into every element, everything about this pristine precision piece is designed to get the floor wriggling. From the crisp digi slap bass to the strident, spacious drum dynamics and textured rhythmic stabs, this is an impeccable example of how measured and meticulous drum & bass production standards are when they’re in the right hands.

‘From Autumn To Ashes’ is truly unique. A word that’s far too overused in dance music, this really is one of a kind; and you’ll understand that the moment those crisp guitar plucks bid you a cold welcome. Spooky sonics a go-go; it’s the moment in a B-movie horror where the cute college girls split up in the woods to find their way home. It’s a white knuckle ride on a rickety ghost train. It’s a run through the fog on a mystical winter’s morning when you really should be in bed. It’s the same fine-tuned balance of hunchback punk and laser-locked bass the duo last showcased on Ram just over a year ago with the equally unique guitar-busting floor-blazer ’64 Thousand Dollar’.
 
Naturally ‘Change’ acts as the perfect foil. Dutch singer Sofie Letitre’s vocals stop you dead in your tracks; surging, urging and distinctive. June Miller have brought the very best out in her as they ruthlessly lay the sub-frequency smack down beneath. Searing and tearing, the bass cuts through the mix like with razor-like charm while the weighty kicks double up at will, tripling on the fills for added drama.
