45 Minutes

A song written for my ma Mary Dagleish [nee Sweeney] about her ma Mary [Molly] Sweeney. Joe was my ma's youngest brother, killed at eighteen years old hitching a lift home from his seminary. Bundles of Catholic guilt here, jigged up with joy. My ma died from an aggressive cancer not long after the song was written and now celebrates her life too. I recorded Panama Dave Parrett's insistent bass line and lovely counterpoint guitar some years back, with Carolyne Locher's sweet vocal in back.  With a new front vox and a retouch/remix, here it is finally ... for the record.

Road to Mary

A meditation, a reflective irenic piece written for my friend Wallee McDonell, who has done amazing work bringing music from all parts of the world together.  The wonderful string arrangement by Sonny Williamson was recorded sometime back in memory by Alice Butcher on violin & Sheena McKenzie on cello, Jem Moorshead more recently moulding the track with bewitching and beautiful sounds. I watched the documentary 'Five Broken Cameras" and as a result, a real voice fell into the mix, a final take ... and with a single breath, it is done! This track was voted into listeners' "Fresh Faves" [Batch 106] on Tom Robinson's 'FreshNet" but sadly missed out on BBC 6 airplay.

Innocence

Born in Greenwich, London 1935, Graeme Miles spent most of his life in and around the Tees, writing his first song, 'Sea Coal' at the age of 14 and his last in 1972. Graeme died in April 2013 with some 400 songs to his name, many of which are sung in folk clubs and regarded as 'traditional'. This arrangement has Ronnie Brown on harp. I've been singing this around Teesside folk clubs and someone suggested a recording. So one day not long ago, Ronnie and I sat opposite each other with a pair of Calrecs and a couple of Shures ... and this happened.

Inspired by self-depreciative graffiti [now removed] on a beautiful covered bridge in Addison County, Vermont.  Is the graffiti a suicide note? Jem Moorshead's instrumentation lifts the mood ...

Cedar Swamp Covered Bridge (1865) • Cornwall / West Salisbury, Vermont USA • Also known as Station Bridge. It was constructed across the Otter Creek (longest river in Vermont), as a single span, providing access for Cornwall residents to the railroad depot in West Salisbury. A concrete central pier was added in 1969 to support the original Town lattice truss, and the marble abutments were covered in concrete. Extensive repairs and new siding were complete in 2008, replacing this oddly self-referential graffiti. • The Cedar Swamp Covered Bridge has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places (#74000386), since 1974.

The song about a song. Nick Drake's "River Man" is lyrically mysterious, heartbreakingly suspended, musically unresolved. This tribute is given flashes of fun and bassy beats by Jem Moorshead's ska interpretation, with Sonny Williamson's string arrangement tenderly taking care to return us to Nick's melancholia. Sheena McKenzie's  cello and Alice Butcher's violin are beautifully played.

Looking for the River Man

We are terminal beings, moving faster to nothingness as we age, or so it seems. Reasoning and science argue for 'nothingness' but does the will have a say? The heart? Old Gabriel might have something to say, or blow ... after all. This song was played by Bob Fischer on BBC Radio Tees 10 - 12 p.m. 16th August 2014.
