396 - United DJ's Of America 4 - Frankie Knuckles (1995)

As a teenager Pablo aka Latence was submerged in the massive party scene emerging from Belgium in the early to mid 90's. Completely absorbed by the impressive momentum surrounding him, he started buying his first tunes, looking for a balance between the tracks that were popular in the scene and the sounds he heard in his head. His immaculate capability of cherrypicking the best of the past and the creme de la creme of new cutting edge dance music made him quickly noticed in the Brussels underground scene. Moreover growing up with a father who was a real music addict and a record collector, his childhood was filled with many musical styles and influences such as: Classic, Latin, Jazz, Funk, Disco and Electronic Music. Starting djing at the age of 16, his strong fascination for software technologies and hardware machines led him to quickly experiment music production for our greatest happiness.

So it is quite naturally that Play Label Records welcomes Latence for its fifth release. This four-track EP delivers us some strong Deep House vibes embellished with melodic touch and dynamic bassline. Those four equally qualitative tracks demonstrate brilliantly all the potential and the talent of this artist. There is no doubt that this EP will burn the dancefloors in the next months and will consolidate the already well-established catalog of the label.

The book on PBR Streetgang has barely even been started and yet it's already become a must-read tome on every last desk here at R$N Towers - even the kitchen staff haven't been able to put it down. Of course, there's no physical book to behold but rather a selection of aural fancies that go down sweeter than anything Mr Kipling has ever made.

However, there's a rumbling near our dungeons and it seems as though Tuff City Kids (Gerd Janson and Lauer) have broken free of our chains, rampaged all over the place and have written their names over the PBR Streetgang book so many times that it could even be considered modern art. Actually, it looks like it's probably even more valuable now. We're going to have to start blaring this out on the foghorn.

PREMIERE: PBR Streetgang - Return To Page One (Tuff City Kids Electro Mix) - (2020Vision)

When Nadeem from Sub-Label Records asked me to provide him with a progressive house mix for a radio show I was concerned that I don't have a collection of contemporary progressive house. What I do have however is a substantial amount of music from the early 1990's - when that genre really blossomed. The genesis of that progressive sound was a club night called 'Renaissance' that was started by Geoff Oakes in 1992 at a club called Venue 44 in Mansfield, a small town in Nottinhamshire. In 1993 the venue was changed to an old printworks in nearby Derby. The club presented a darker, deeper, more melodic sound than the more 'rave' oriented music policies of other clubs across the UK. It was typically seamlessly and harmonically mixed (which a young DJ called Sasha had been tutored in by Jon Da Silva at the Hacienda). The decor, artwork and branding was all carefully thought out - with chandeliers on the ceiling and dark velvet drapes and renaissance artwork projected onto the walls. From an interview with Oakes:
"The visual identity was a deliberate move away from the ‘rave’ influenced artwork of most clubs at the time. The distressed renaissance imagery really stood out and marked the night as something different... I wanted a mix of cool and full-on clubbers, which happened and worked perfectly. I was lucky to catch on very early to that wave of British artistes, djs and producers that started to come through in the early ‘90’s. Leftfield, Guerilla records, etc. That whole progressive sound was tagged as the Renaissance sound by the press."
Sasha was a close friend and key component of the night from the beginning. The whole thing was built around him, and the last 2 or 3 hrs of the night were his platform. I had only been running Renaissance for a few months when a mix tape from a completely unknown DJ from Hastings landed on my doorstep. It was, of course, John Digweed. John put music together in a really unique way and it was when i teamed him up with Sasha that the musical identity of the brand crystallised. I had the best two DJ's in the world as residents and they helped shape Renaissance’s reputation for musical integrity."
Alexander Coe (aka Sasha) and John Digweed were resident DJ's from early 1993 until late 1994. This mix attempt to capture the sound of a Sasha and John Digweed mix from very late 1993. All tracks are verified as forming part of the selections of that pair of DJ's in that year.
