Phantogram - Fall In Love - Reimagination

Following recent releases for Parisian institution Ed Banger Records, a huge collaboration with rising vocalist Meleka, and his own Battle Weapons free download series tailored for the dancefloor, the UK’s resident genre-blurring boy wonder, Riton aka Henry Smithson, announces a brand new EP for Nest.

Title track ‘I Am The Whisper’ finds Bad Guy Ri Ri in a darker, deeper mode than previous releases, with vaguely sinister spoken word vocals from London-based singer/songwriter Molly Beanland peppering a propulsive beat and acid stabs. “I’m warning you, once we start we’ll never stop,” she threatens. B-side ‘Dance With Moi’ punches hard from the get go, expertly melding techno, electro and house influences in true Riton style.

Zombi - Shadow Hand

Dropped down amongst the knobs and dials of Penguin Studio in San Diego, rogue avatars Justin Pearson and Luke Henshaw have created a new project in the form of Planet B, with the shared purpose of creating music both mischievous in sound and sobering in message.
The first artifact from the preternatural duo comes in the form of this “Wrong Utopia” 7” single. Featuring two tracks, both can be heard almost as otherworldly anthems: catchy, heavily percussive, and eerie all at once. Pearson sneers lyrics that present the viewpoint of an outsider looking on at his surroundings: “Sell a good bad luck charm/ watch them hurt their own arm/ shaking their bloody fist/ in the world of the nihilist,” seemingly uninterested in taking part and instead deciding that “’Tween the moth and the web, I’ll make a new landmark.” This is interspersed with Henshaw’s fantastical sci-fi accompaniments: whistling UFO vibrato, dark and distorted electrical hums, and marching band drum beats. Basically, “Wrong Utopia” has all the makings of your next interdimensional earworm.
Side 2 of the single, “Join a Cult”, has a more foreboding sound, a sort of thunderous and creepy call to arms. This is in large part due to the booming drums, live wire buzzes, and digital echoes that brings to mind an oncoming swarm of mechanical insects headed straight for the song’s settings of burning houses and dry fields, “the one without a view”. This is all punctuated by whimsical bells that are unsettling in the context of the song, much in the same way that hearing a child singing in a horror movie is.

PLANET B "Wrong Utopia"

US black metal outfit, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS,  will release their latest full-length studio album, The Accuser, via Candlelight Records next month.

Closing a three-year gap since their last album, the eight hymns comprising ABIGAIL WILLIAMS’ corrosive The Accuser are bleak, dark, and infinitely engrossing, and will quickly be viewed as the band’s best work since their genesis in Los Angeles in 2004. The lineup, fronted by founding vocalist/guitarist Ken Sorceron (ex-Lord Mantis), now features guitarist Jeff Wilson (Wolvhammer, Chrome Waves, Doomsday, La Chant Funebre), and drummer Charlie Fell (Cobalt, ex-Lord Mantis, ex-Avichi) with recording bassist Will Lindsay (Indian, Lord Mantis, Anatomy Of Habit) and live bassist John Porada (Negative Mantra, Terminate, ex-Nachtmystium). The diseased offering was recorded, mixed and mastered in just five days by Sorceron at the band’s home studio in Olympia, Washington, and boasts a guest appearance by Neill Jameson (Krieg, Twilight) and the tripnotic cover renderings of Portland-based illustrator/tattoo artist, Stevie Floyd (Dark Castle, Taurus).

As a precursor to its release, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS will bring their audio slayings to the stage on a thirty-four-city North American tour with visionary metal trio, Today Is the Day. The tour kicks off in Salt Lake City tonight, Friday, September 11th, and runs through most of the US and into Canada, ending on October 16th in San Francisco.

Additional tour dates and further audio samples from The Accuser will be released in the coming days.

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS - "Lost Communion"

NEEDS

Raw M.T. graduates from Mörk to the Lobster Theremin main label with three thundering granite slabs of techno and house. 

The spirit of US house genres raises it's head once again, fuelled by a raw, scorched-earth production aesthetic coming from the deepest lair of the Italian producer. 

One Last Shot is a race-against-time, hyper-filtered acid techno epic. Thundering drum-work that rises from the ashes and and slams it's feet into the acid puddles of the bubbling 303. 

Sky makes it's appearance in it's Rough Mix form, coveting a much crunchier sound than the mysterious clean version and coming wrapped in analogue fuzz, with all arps set to kill and hats crushed into the ceiling. 

Lastly we get Richard's Revenge, a heaving, bleeping Chicago-meets-Detroit beatdown number that threads cosmic modular shots in a among through the drum-crushed haze. When those soaring strings hit, you know what's happening.

Wolfsheim are a synthpop duo from Hamburg, Germany consisting of Markus Reinhardt (music) and Peter Heppner (lyrics and vocals). The band was founded in 1987 by Markus Reinhardt and Pompejo Ricciardi and was named after Meyer Wolfsheim, a fictional character from F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel ‘The Great Gatsby’.  Ricciardi soon left the band and was replaced by Peter Heppner, a childhood friend of Reinhardt's. Together they produced their first demo tape, “Ken Manage”, in 1988.

After making a second demo tape, “Any But Pretty”, in 1989, Wolfsheim applied at various labels until they caught the attention of independent record label Strange Ways Records. They are best known for their debut breakthrough single, "The Sparrows and the Nightingales”, the first single to be released on Strange Ways in 1991. The band's musical style takes cues from the 1980s New Romantics, new wave, synthpop, and darkwave. The track's sombre synths were produced by Carlos Peron of Yello. Reinhardt says the lyric was inspired by ‘The Great Gatsby’, "in the 'onomatopoeic tension' between predator and security."  Over six minutes, the narrator describes being lost, unsure of where his life is heading, using highly metaphorical language. On the flip is a brand new remix by German producer Ancient Methods, a pseudonym of Michael ‘Trias’ Wollenhaupt, who provides a driving, EBM-leaning, amphetamine-laced club ready cut.

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Designer Eloise Leigh has updated the record's original design with two sparrows
enclosed in a blood moon circle against a deep black purple backdrop. Each copy comes with a black and white photo postcard notes by Carlos Peron and the song's lyrics. This release comes in time to celebrate the single’s 25th anniversary.

A year after his last outing on the label, Gunnar Haslam is back on Delsin with four more tracks of idiosyncratic techno. Before Haslam has also released on LIES and Mister Saturday Night, and each time he does he finds new life and excitement in this most tried and tested form. 

Opening up this EP with the title track, Haslam cooks up a spangled brew of erratic synths and spinning hi hats and ties them together with a heavy rubber kick drum. Dynamic and restless, it is a perfect tune to freak out the floor. ‘Sarsi’ is then completely different, with a rippling synth line growing ever more intense as sombre chords stretch out behind. It is a beatless and emotionally forlorn cut that still manages to take you somewhere special. 

On the flip, ‘Sirenik’ gets back to deep dance floor business with a scale-climbing bassline and prickly hi hats all moving at an inviting pace. Scurrying alien sounds, distant dub chords and bouncy drums flesh things out and make for an emotional roller coaster before ‘Hellegat’ closes thing out in frenzied, Millsian style. As mad synths dart about like balls in a lottery machine, a creepy sense of tension builds behind and physical drums punch you down low. Each track here is different from the last, and each track here is a refreshing proposition from one of the most interesting guys around.

Dekmantel is thrilled to announce an exciting new project by the impeccable Robert Hood. Over the course of three EPs and one album, the Detroit legend presents Paradygm Shift. The first EP is scheduled for the 22th of February. Hood: ‘‘The idea behind Paradygm Shift is similar to a shift in our focus. We can become so complacent; we are so comfortable with our surroundings, I think this is the time for electronic music to find a new mindset.’’

Hood is thrilled about his new adventure on the Dekmantel label: ‘‘I’m glad to partner up with them on this project. I have a very good relationship with Dekmantel. I remember the first time I met them, how laidback these guys were. I performed in this illegal bunker, a dj-set, and the atmosphere was just amazing, awesome and open-minded. It seems like a natural progression to collaborate on this project now. We share a mutual responsibility not to let fall things just in place, but to make things happen. Dekmantel is about making things happen, and so like minds think alike.’’    

Inspiration for Paradygm Shift came from a shift in Hood’s own focus. ‘‘I have been busy with my Floorplan alias and reintroducing Monobox over the years, but at the same time I felt it necessary to reiterate Robert Hood as an electronic music artist who is bringing minimalism back in the forefront, and not to get lost in the melody. I want to get back to the simple repetitive programming that I’m known for, and to me it was returning to that, but shifting the listeners’ focus and not staying on this plane like we are used to.” 

This approach clearly manifests on Paradygm Shift Volume 1, the first EP that kicks of the series with great anticipation. Two tracks that have ‘Rob Hood’ written all over it: minimalistic beasts, bursting from energy and meticulously crafted by the hand of a master producer. ‘Form’ slowly but surely creeps upon you, a slow starter, but in the end the techno funk-finesse will roar like a Detroit car engine. ‘Lockers’ follows a slightly more melodic path, keeping the momentum by delivering body shaking, pulsating techno, deep and timeless just the way we like it.

Youth Code - 'The Dust Of Fallen Rome'

Comprised  of  Bristol  based  sound  artists  Adam  Winchester  and  Christopher Jarman, Dot Product comes to light in a swathe of noise, tone and texture. 

Through  years  of  research  and  experimentation the  duo  have  sought  to explore  the  creative  potential from  the  inaudible  fog  of electromagnetic radiation, the internal resonance found in the negative space of an object, the circuitry of discarded electronics,and other such less-travelled paths of sound generation. In harnessing these clandestine sonics and bringing them within a listenable  range,  the  resulting  collages  of  sound  have  been  shaped  into  a form   that   nods   to   the   legacy   of uncompromising British   experimental electronic  music,from  early  industrial  savagery  to  bass-heavy  soundsystem pressure.  Such  reference  points  are  abstract  though,  for  within  the  truly unique array of sources at their disposal, Winchester and Jarman have a new dialect in which to communicate. 

Crucially,  while  there  may  be  a  scientific  approach  at  the  heart  of  the  Dot Product  methodology,  the  results  are  far  from  clinical. There  are  subversive rhythms aplenty throughout the album, from the jagged ripples of “Skafander” to the slow, dread-fuelled march of “Springs”. There is also space for touches of melody; “Atmosphere Processor” swoons with blue-hued melancholy, while “Ice Patches” stalks on an ominous bass mantra. 

After sharing the initial results of their research, the pair performed select live shows in Bristol and London, as well as being commissioned to create a sonic interpretation  of  Swedish  horror  film Let  The  Right  One  In.  This  debut  album on Osiris is the culmination of these initial steps, these 9 tracks representing the most complete document of the Dot Product sound to date.
