A beautifully warm, diverse and wiggly mix from Oakland, California based Wonja (@wonj). Alongside being a talented dj & avid record collector, Wonja makes up one half of Motoko & Myers with her partner Dan. 

I'm constantly impressed by the wide-spanning range of genres, styles and moods that make up Wonja's mix catalogue - always new and always fresh.  For this mix, she's put together a playful and eclectic mix of glitch, groove and interesting soundscapes.

Animix Seventy One: Wonja

Here we are with a recording from the first (but certainly not last) time Kiernan Laveaux graced the decks at Nowadays back in September of 2021. In it you’ll find so much of what we’ve come to love about the T4T LUV NRG affiliate: swarming percussion, freaky and frenetic psychedelia, otherworldly groove, a captivating sense of narrative, and so much more. 

This mix is a two and a half hour segment from her closing set, after DJ Voices and Azu Tiwaline earlier in the night. Packed to the brim with moments of tension and release, it makes for one truly wild and mesmerizing ride. The home listener is likely to find it just as enchanting as the dancers did.

Nowadays Live and Direct 014 - Kiernan Laveaux

It's time to pass the decks to AV curator and DJ Boo Lean (Lauren Goshinski) who's always full of surprises and channels the energy of a recent storm in podcast number 110. It's a wild ride that goes straight in for the kill with tracks from Silence Groove and a Phantasy & Aphorite remix. Keeping that energy alive and pumping throughout the mix, Boo Lean uses this opportunity to rinse tracks that she hasn't put into mixes yet. Proving no storm is too strong for Boo Lean as she effortlessly weaves through the records in one take, thriving in amongst the chaos. In her own words, she describes the mix as "spring cleaning my mind, body, n’ soul. Deep Swifferin’ Mode." We certainly feel revitalised after this cleanse!

"My idea was 5am tracks, a whole mix of them. What would sound great at this unusual time? It’s rare for people to play music at that hour. A fun challenge of heady, pretty and deep. I was digging and finding songs I’ve had for 10 years, sometimes I forget it’s fine to go way back and not worry so much about if the tracks are current and nobody has heard them. I caught a groove and the energy of the mix picks up in the second half, but hey that could happen at 5am, anything is possible!"

@blibrae aka. Bailey Hoffman is well known in Brooklyn’s underground club scene. Co-founding the Technofeminism parties alongside Discwoman’s Umfang at the Bossa Nova Civic Club in 2013, and with an on-going residency at Nowadays NYC since 2018, she’s had releases on Allergy Season, Lillerne Tapes, 1080p and Incensio, and a live show debut at Panorama Bar.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: 
Remember your roots - dance floors have always been sites of political change, and we are the next generation! Rave spaces are not inherently radical. While we've made so much progress in breaking down the homogenous wall of cis white dudes in electronic music, the work never stops. As creatives, we each have a duty to balance our own practices with creating space for others. We all have something unique to contribute, but we run the risk of replicating hegemonic dynamics if we don't create equity within our communities. A healthy creative ecosystem requires a lush diversity of experiences and practices. Be kind, be conscientious, and have fun... after all, it's a party.
