Mindspring Music Presents: DEVICEFUL - Process Interactive [MSM109]

“Process Interactive” by DEVICEFUL (aka DB) is based around a keen fascination with how much information comes into our minds and spirit; and how that process results in music. Memories, emotion, relationships, love, synths, voices, samples, percussion, and FX all sort of meld, pushed forward by the inspiration of other artist’s creations. So much being processed, and flowing back out as music/song creations that evolve into a bit of something to be heard, and hopefully enjoyed. While writing and producing these four tracks, Don Brown, the producer felt blessed to have so many amazing pallets of color to work from and so many incredible artists to be inspired by. One of his all-time favorites is Illusive Tuna. Their work has been and continues to be, very inspirational for him, and when they agreed to remix Creole Cave of Wonders for this EP, it put just the perfect point on it.

So, what is a "Utility Groove" anyway?  

I imagine this like a back-up generator.  When the beat has abandoned you, when the vibe is absent, when you feel everything starting to wind down--you call on your "Utility Groove" and it will get things going again--perhaps not for very long, nor at full power...but enough to get you by.  

This is the latest track from Interbay--and if you've been following along and reading these descriptions, you know that I'm constantly trying to force my neurodivergent/adhd brain to keep things simple.  And usually, my efforts result in something that could be collected and shared by FailArmy.  I just have to color in every blank space--and it can make for some very interesting compositions, but those can often confuse listeners not prepared for lurches into different tempos or the blendings of genres never meant to blend (not to mention the songs that drag out for seven, eight, even nine minutes in length.  Fine if you're an acid rock band or if you're making trance records, but thanks to MTV and TikTok, not really built for modern attention spans.)  

I had a little piano figure I wanted to work with...and I knew I wanted it to be slower paced...and I didn't want to overstuff this one, I wanted to keep it (say it with me now) simple.  

...and I think I did it.  For once, I kept the track simple!  

There's not much too this--it's a little slip of a song, based around that piano, an upright bass and a boom bap beat.  (I couldn't even kid myself long enough to add the hip hop & rap tag--this would only piss off fans of those genres if they got linked to it.)  

I'd call it triphop--and thus, part of electronic music.  There's also some electronic processing, some thunderous 808s...a vintage soulful vocal sample, a couple of saxophones...and that's about it.  It did the job assigned to it, it gets in...it does its thing...and it gets out of there.  

I did have thoughts about adding more vocal samples, possibly explaining the title/narrative with words in the song instead of words in the description, but I think you can "get" what its going for without them...and that opens up the space and lets this track breathe a little--thankfully!  

It always seems like such damnedable faint praise to describe this as "pleasant"--but compared to the often much noisier and abrasive tracks that Interbay has shared with the world in two and a half years...I think "pleasant" is EXACTLY what this track is.  

It is the groove you need when you just need a groove.  Thus, it is your "Utility Groove".
