DJ Chris Case was a regular at many Tokyo chill-out rooms in the 1990s, including the legendary Odyssey parties at Club Token. One of the older faces on the scene, he represented a connection between the psychedelic 90s and the psychedelic 60s, and he offered a lot of arcane knowledge when it came to music theory. 
Chris passed away last year, and I’m uploading this mix in his memory.. I don’t keep a lot of DJ mixes, but I’ve had this CDR for 30 years now, and remarkably it still played. I’m not sure exactly when Chris mixed this, but I would guess late 1995. Most of the music is from Silent Records, which was one of the premier ambient labels based in San Francisco in the 90s. Deep, slow pulsing basslines carry the exotic cargo of sound; pretty and gritty instrumentation, the ululation and trill of womens' traditional vocal techniques, and the swoop of mens' choruses.  North African rhythms shuffle and sway beneath the cresting timbre of taught, bluesy guitars, purposeful sintirs and the cascade of Malian harps (ngonis). Hand-claps and qraqebs (double-ended metal "castanets") chatter  hypnotically around the deep, definitive low end which craft the ethos of this 60-minute journey across the desert cultures of Mali, North Western Sahara, Morocco and Algeria.

The Tuareg inhabit the Saharan regions of North Africa - Niger, Mali, Libya, Algeria and Burkina Faso. From Wikipedia: The origins and meanings of the name Tuareg have long been debated. It would appear that Twārəg is derived from the broken plural of Tārgi, a name whose former meaning was "inhabitant of Targa", the Tuareg name of the Libyan region commonly known as Fezzan. Targa in Berber means "(drainage) channel".[20] Another theory is that Tuareg is derived from Tuwariq, the plural of the Arabic exonym Tariqi.[10]

No one knows the true origin of the Tuareg, where they came from or when they arrived in the Sahara. Reputedly of Berber descent, the language of the Tuareg is Tamachek, with their own script known as Tifinagh, thought to have ancient Libyan roots. Their numbers are unclear, but estimates run between 300,000 and 1 million. The Tuareg were recorded by the Greek historian Herodotus in the 5th Century BC.
 
The most striking attribute of the Tuareg is the indigo veil, worn by the men but not the women, giving rise to the popular name the Blue Men of the Sahara, or Men of the Veil. Men begin wearing a veil at the age 25.

The history of underground electronic music is littered with inspired releases that, for one reason or other, slipped through the cracks. It would be fair to say that Trans-4M’s 1992 debut album, Sublunar Oracles, is one such release.

The full-length originally appeared on Belgian dance music megalith Buzz, an imprint whose output tended towards the more commercial end of the dance music market. Initially, Sublunar Oracles failed to make much impact and was championed only by a small group chill-out DJs; these days, it’s rightly considered a lost classic and one of the most overlooked albums of the ambient house era.

It’s certainly an inspired set with a story to tell. It was the product of the blossoming studio relationship between brothers Stefan and Dimitri Van Elsen. The former, the elder of the two, had been making a living as a club DJ on the Belgian scene since the early 1980s, taking up electronic music production following years spent playing experimental and industrial fare on local pirate station Radio Centraal. Dimitri, meanwhile, spent his days studying jazz piano and his evenings working on tracks.

The chance to release a collection of their bedroom productions came via a friend who worked for Buzz. The Van Elsen brothers grasped the opportunity, sequencing and tweaking a set of evocative, otherworldly tracks that had initially been written and produced over the best part of four years.

Despite Stefan’s status as a working club DJ, Sublunar Oracles largely looked towards the vibrant chill-out and ambient house scenes for inspiration, combining their own manipulated synthesizer sounds, dreamy jazz chord progressions and gentle beats with a smorgasbord of spoken word samples and home-made field recordings.

The Antwerp-based brothers designed the set as a concept album of sorts, with a clear narrative thread running through the album’s eight intoxicating and ethereal tracks. However, they never made this concept public, and it’s down to a new generation of listeners to piece together the story themselves.

26 years on from its initial release, the Van Elsens’ lost classic is getting a new lease of life via a Safe Trip reissue that stretches the original’s eight inspired tracks over two heavyweight slabs of wax. Beginning with the breakbeat-driven bliss of “Arrival”, the album bobs and weaves its way through deep ambient house, sublime horizontal soundscapes, saxophone-laden electronic mysticism, dusty downtempo grooves and glassy-eyed positivity.

Makyo:
Makyo is a Tokyo-based producer & dj who has been creating exotic Eastern electronica since 1994, with releases on Silent Records, World Domination, Dakini Records, legendary London label Planet Dog, Six Degrees, Interchill, and many more. As a remixer, Makyo has worked with Cheb-i-Sabbah, Natacha Atlas, Transglobal Underground, Adham Shaikh, Solace, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Kaya Project, and Shahin Badar, while Bill Laswell and System 7 have remixed Makyo tracks. Makyo's music has also featured on mix cds by Alex Patterson (The Orb), Youth, and Mixmaster Morris. As an early pioneer of the asian-electronic sound, Makyo has developed his sound contemporaneously with producers like Banco de Gaia, Loop Guru, Talvin Singh, and Karsh Kale.
