This was an assigned project at Musicians Institute, Hollywood, California, where I am a student.  I was assigned to write a song in one of three genres - I chose outlaw country.  I was also assigned to choose between three topics, and keep my selection private, but reveal the topic indirectly within the lyrics. 8Dio Blendstrument Motion Textures: "2020" by Pieter Schlosser

ALEXANDRE DESPLAT's "The Detonators," from HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS (Pt. 1)

This is definitely my most elaborate MIDI "orchestral covers" attempt to date, which required me to create a pretty large "template" (in LOGIC) containing the following fun mix of instruments (and divided sections): 4 Flutes (all doubling on Alto flute), 2 Clarinets, 2 Bass Clarinets, 3 Recorders, 3 Bassoons (one doubling on Contrabassoon), 6 French Horns, 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, 1 Tuba, Percussion (Timpani, Orchestra Bells, Vibraphone, Triangle, Bass Drum), Harp, Celeste, Piano, 16 1st and 2nd Violins, 14 Violas, 12 Celli, 8 Double Basses... And my computer didn't die! (All VIENNA SYMPHONIC LIBRARY samples, except for some percussion, which was PROJECT SAM's TRUE STRIKE 1, and SOUNDIRON's EMOTIONAL PIANO.)

I love the SOUND of this entire score (recorded in ABBEY ROAD), both its CDs (Vols. 1-2) which I happily purchased sometime over this past year. And, of course, Desplat's work is some of my favorite film music, of all time. I hope I can find the time to try another one of his pieces! Or (if I was smart), use this giant template to brew some fresh Turner tuneage, lol.

A rock singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/film composer, Dale Turner is also an instructor at Hollywood's Musicians Institute, and author of 50+ instructional books/transcription folios (his latest being "Power Plucking - A Rocker's Guide to Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar"). He writes a monthly acoustic guitar column for Guitar World magazine, and is featured in their "Lick of the Day" app for iPhone/iPad. A Los Angeles resident, Turner is also the former West Coast Editor (1996-2007) of the now defunct Guitar One magazine.

Turner composed the original score for the animated short film WEEDS, the first animated short to be completed within the Filmmakers Co-op at Disney Feature Animation. WEEDS was one of three "commended" (extra) films included in 2018 OSCAR NOMINATED SHORT FILMS: ANIMATED SHORTS, the theatrical release of five Academy Award nominated animated shorts--Dear Basketball, Garden Party, Lou, Negative Space, and Revolting Rhymes--nominated for the 90th Academy Awards.

Guitar Player Magazine calls Turner's latest CD, Mannerisms Magnified: "Smart pop tunes that are crammed with interesting guitar parts and tones ... Like what the Beach Boys might do if they were on an acid trip that was on the verge of getting out of control. Yeah!"
