Deep Velvet (Hybrid Remix 2015)

Award-winning sci-fi writer Geoff Ryman's was commissioned to write a new story for the BBC, investigating the portrayal of gender in utopian science fiction, as part of BBC Radio 4's Utopia season.

I scored the new work and a separate documentary exploring the subject. This is an instrumental excerpt from the score as many people had expressed an interested in hearing it again.

The United Nations recently predicted that the world population will exceed ten billion by the year 2050. If this prediction is correct, a staggering population boom will occur over the coming thirty years, at a rate never previously witnessed by mankind. This piece responds to the mind-boggling number, ten billion, by giving it a sonic form. Each tiny microsound, or grain, represents one person and, taken as a whole, they number ten billion. The piece, which is 40 minutes in total, was composed for 10 loudspeakers at the studios of Bowling Green State University, USA. I am extremely grateful to Joe Klingler, for funding the Klingler ElectroAcoustic Residency (KEAR), and staff and students at Bowling Green for accommodating my visit. Special thanks go to Dr. Elainie Lillios who worked extremely hard to make the residency happen, and was exceptionally helpful and kind throughout. Ten Billion is dedicated to my wife, Inja Stanović.

An intriguing journey through sound and space. Throughout these auditory landscapes there are endless, delicious, aural moments - sensual, shimmering, organic textures that 'keep your ears on their toes' (to use an appropriately unsettling metaphor).

As the tracks rise and fall there is a sense of continual momentum as constant sonic surprises are juxtaposed against an array of rhythmic textures that lull you into a false sense of security. Huge claustrophobic emptiness evolves into dark brightness that alternates between now and then, here and there, within and without.

If you like the more experimental side of electronic music - from the vintage German classics of yore to the current sounds of avant-garde, minimal techno (via Killing Joke and Burial!) - indulge yourself for 44 minutes and let Equipoise take you somewhere away from the misery of 2020 to an alternate universe of new possibilities, anticipation and wonders.
