CE029 - Animistic Beliefs - Molucca Quake EP

@HardFist comes back stronger than ever with a sixth release, this time from @Pletnev with a remix from Sascha Funke. Prolific artist and Sinchi Collective member Alex Pletnev has been making music under various aliases and in a number of live bands. The Russian, now settled in Vilnius explores stellar chugging rhythms, afro and oriental vibes for labels like Media Fury and Bahnsteig23 and more atmospheric, dark and industrial EPs on Le Temps Perdu records. This new one is “the tale of an imaginary world, a babel myth of when human beings were together as one because they spoke a single language. It is an allusion of No Border movement supporting freedom of mobility and fighting human immigration control.”

This fantastic release is the most club focussed music Pletnev have produced. ‘Peep of Dawn,’ is an almost frightening, long and slow ceremony of menacing electronic music. A voice resonates while powerful bass sends shivers down your spine and the whole atmospheric and absorbing affair really casts a spell.

Once again here, the Hard Fist label, which has its own residency at Paris’s mighty Rex Club—tells its unique story with forward thinking club music full of a wide array of influences.

Infamous Hungarian party promoters, Secret Factory invites @Occam to take care of the second release on their Secret Fusion label with three remixes from Curses (@Cursesforever), La Mano and the label owners themselves providing a Secret factory remix.

Occam is a life-long drummer who has been in various bands and involved with making plenty of albums. He has played clubs and festivals from the UK to Russia and has been part of BBE artist DJ Bootsie’s live act for more than a decade. His compelling original here is ‘The Dark Slide,’ a driving bit of late night dark disco that comes with colourful melodies. A bold lead synth line goes ever higher while elastic drums get your body moving. It’s a track to step things up in the middle of the set and will do so with real style.

Berlin-based New Yorker Curses is known for blending rock & roll with the darker side of disco, his own ghostly vocals and guitar with flashes of EBM and post-punk. Here he layers in edgy chords and prickly drums that are driven by slapping hits. It’s raw and energetic with subtle 80s vibes that make it all the more standout.

Norwell - Ot Seit [MTRONAID]

Known for his grainy, analogue dance floor hits, Hungarian artist Norwell has returned with a powerful and transcendent 4-track EP, releasing through Fanzine Records. In Between EP is a drum-heavy, intricate series of grooves and soundscapes that draw the listener in from the beginning. While remaining faithful to the tendencies of techno, this record brings something of its own to the table in the form of acidic basslines and retro Kosmiche synth parts, resulting in a stunning array of textures. 

Eastern Echoes is the opening track on this EP, and it deserves that spot. Combining an intense, Aphex-esque drum beat with hazy, dreamlike Middle Eastern inspired vox and pads, this track is a pumped-up monster of an introduction to the EP. This is immediately followed up with Evaporate Yourself, a dark and brooding beat with a serpentine bassline that creeps its way through the track and combines with the lush, ethereal ebb and flow of the detuned synths and horror-themed vocals. This track is as cosmic as it is industrial, and sits on the fence between the two in a very unique way. Model 244 on the other hand utilises a much more 70’s modular sound reminiscent of early Kraftwerk hits adapted to the modern age. The track builds layers upon layers of left-field percussion that dance around the central arpeggiated bass in a very pleasing way, and Norwell doesn’t leave out his signature glitchy, mechanical soundscapes, which give the track its glorious tension and release. The EP is rounded off with Repetition Void, potentially the most experimental of the four tracks. Flanged hi-hats dance around the listeners ears and hazy analogue keys induce a hypnotic trance, exacerbated by the almost Papal choir vocals that fit seamlessly into the background.

As Norwell’s first release through the Fanzine Label, this EP is dark, it is foreboding, and with the unexpected turns the rhythm takes, it doesn’t care about your feelings. If you’re ready to be punched in the face by this sci-fi horror listening experience, watch for the release of this EP, Fanzine latest addition to their roster of tasty electronic jams.

Norwell - In Between Ep - Fanzine 012

Hungarian music producer Balázs Semsei, who operates under the pseudonym Norwell, brings us ‘In Between’, his first EP release on the Spanish label Fanzine Records. Norwell is renowned for his glitchy, celestial dance hits and drawing inspiration from obscure subgenres, such as acid Arab. His music often makes listeners reminiscent of old-school Kraftwerk as he experiments with retro soundscapes. Fans won’t be disappointed with this powerful new release, as each track bears elements of Norwell’s unique style while showing his ability to enter new territory and combine a multitude of influences. 

The fourth and final track on the EP, ‘Repetition Void’, is an echo chamber of hazy melancholy. A hypnotic white noise effect is conceived from the combination of a soft synth hi-hat, faint muffled vocals, and resonating analogue keys.
