Here we go with the start of a new epic… This time we travel back to the days of Merlin and tell his tale, the tale of his life outside of King Arthur… The life you probably know very little about. So please sit back and enjoy as we tell his story over the next 6 songs. We begin with “The Great Sorcerer” himself.

1. The Great Sorcerer:

See that mist, where dragons live
How can someone see so many tomorrows?

In the shadows
Staff in his hand
Shapeshifting to beasts of earth
Creating myths of our once reigning kingdom
Creating myths of the weakness
And the greatness of men.

And we still hear
Look at all there’s to learn
Science, Science,
The only purity there is

Born at the wrong end of time
Living backwards from in front
We can’t forget he told our unparalleled King
Power of mind’s not enough,
Power of the body decides

This is our Great Sorcerer
We are in awe how easily he
Steps between our two worlds

Earthly, supernatural

Knowledge, the mastership to change fate
What a double-edged sword
Reveling in results of his power
Disregarding the harm

Teaching esoteric
Incantations and spells
To the Lady of the Lake
And in time you know he surrenders to her
He could protect fools from themselves
Couldn’t protect himself from himself.

This is our Great Sorcerer

1. The Great Sorcerer

We Are Stars In The Night

That’s why we sing the blues 
We are made up

By and by some dreams they slip away
Into just sidewalk impositions 

Of homemade signs and leathered hand asides
From the concrete of this city that cries
In a currency of pleas for pity or sin
As the spiders ever spinning just drop on in

We can’t fight the flow of that which is imminent 
There’s a change in the air and that much is evident
Resent for such feeble attempts to prevent the words flowing like water feet stuck in cement 
We were warned by the prophets that with words alone one can not repent

In our face 
Pyritic green venomous whispering snake
Hiss of illusory promises
Blinds the aspirants
Confounds this coerced participant

Don’t dare walk away as this shit unfolds
Outstretched arms offer an ethos or begging for gold
Resent for such feeble attempts to prevent words burning like a fire face stuck in your head

here comes the last of the three works on ‘retrospective future’.

background: as alarming as the scenarios are that scientists predict for the year 2100 if there is no rapid change in the way we treat our environment, this future still feels like abstract sci-fi, just beyond our imagination – more than twice as far away as the year 2001 was when kubrick's ‘a space odyssey’ came out.

but then, we watch our granddaughter, who just turned three, riding her scooter, screaming with joy. we realize how incredibly quickly time has passed since we were her age. and we have to think that in 2100, she will be only slightly older than we are today. and suddenly, 2100 becomes just one heartbeat away, an infinitely sad one.

I wrote 'scooting aleece' which originally dealt with a wild friend of us 40 years ago and we loved singing it at our all-night parties for two, albeit with different lyrics. recently, I rewrote the lyrics as a dedication to our granddaughter for the reasons mentioned above. to her and to all other kids her age.

while working on the AI vocals for the original 4/4 arrangement, for some reason I kept hearing a 3/4 beat in my head, which completely turned the entire compositional concept on its head. so, after creating the first version, which was faithful to the original, I created a second one that was completely different. and because it also featured a vocal premiere, I’d like to share this second version first. the first one will come later, if anyone is interested.
